He waited out the last few, lingering shudders from the TARDIS, clinging to the wall like a frightened squirrel up a tree, and then swiftly bounded off for the console once he was certain she'd landed. This was not good, not good at all—circuits were melted, wires sparking, the entire control panel smoking and right about now everything was quickly going pear-shaped for the Doctor.
“No, no, no, no, no,” he lamented on a miserable whimper, waving away the smoke with the back of his hands, stabbing buttons and jamming switches and knobs with the flat of his palm until the ship whined and seemed to weaken, leaving all power reserves shutdown to the minimum of auxiliary. The familiar green and blue glow dimmed substantially and the high pitched wail of malfunctioning machinery appeared to cease.
His feet started to move in an aimless, backward pedal until his backside connected with the jump seat and he slumped upon it, defeated and slouched with elbows on knees. Stuck. He was, for all he knew at this juncture in time, land ridden in a place that refused to show up on any of the TARDIS sensors. As far as bad news went, this was fairly disheartening.
But not impossible.
At least he hoped not.
With a quick inhale through his nose and a parting glance to the console, he puffed out the offending air and tore himself from the seat, dodging exposed wiring as he made for the doors. Smoke billowed forth from the interior when he shoved past the entrance. . . . and stepped into a gloppy mess of mud that trailed out into what looked like some kind of waterfront district.
Still-solid ground, ha!
He slipped back into the TARDIS long enough to retrieve his overcoat, track an offensive amount of mud across the metal ramp and close the doors in his wake. Once outside, he wriggled into the brown material and stuffed his hands firmly into his pockets and started walking toward the cluster of bright city lights in the distance.
Now, if he could just determine where he was, that would certainly be a start.
