"Your mother.." Just mentioning Lily made Remus smile some despite himself and he closed his eyes briefly before opening them again. "Lily and I were good friends first and second year.. we were closer third through fifth. Six and seventh year we were best friends. I was the one who told her that she needed to give James a chance.. that she needed to see how much he'd grown up, how much he'd matured. And one day she decided that she was going to give it a shot, and the two of them started dating." He leaned back a little before sitting forward again, touching once more at his arm, gently.
"She was a very nice girl. She was beautiful, really beautiful. Smart. Funny. But she was calm, not rambunctious like James and Sirius. She would have rather sat in a library and read a good book than run around on crazy adventures. Would have rather helped people than made mischief. I met her first, on the train to Hogwarts. We sat together, we talked about books, about Hogwarts, about what to expect.. I didn't meet your father and Sirius until later." Even as he said that, he smiled again and shook his head some. "When James asked her out, she'd make up lies about why she couldn't go on a date. She was washing her hair. She was attending a ball on Mount Olympus. She was having her colon removed.. but you could always tell when she was lying, even when they weren't so blatant. She was terrible at it. She had this habit.. she used to.." He lifted his hand, rubbing at the back of his neck slowly. "Rub her neck, like this. It was always a dead give away that she was nervous about something. James always called her on it." It seemed funny to Remus, now.
"James was a very good friend of mine. Is a very good friend of mine. He had his faults, he could be awful when he wanted to be. But.. your mother.. she was.. she was wonderful. Always. She always did the right thing, or tried to."
