He answered the question she hadn't wanted to ask, but now Rose knew without question or doubt the reason, the underlying, pressing force behind Jack's pain. Whether or not he loved Ianto wasn't the question - of course he did, Rose knew that well enough to be true, she could see it just from the way Jack looked at Ianto - but it was the fact he hadn't been able to tell him. And sometimes things did need saying.
Does it need saying?
Yes. Sometimes, it does.
Rose pulled Jack as close as she could, ignoring the blood and folding her arms across his back as if that would somehow be enough to keep him in and against her, safe. It was strange to now think of herself as the one protecting Jack when it was clearly known he was so strong, but Rose had grown and changed enough in her own life to know that she could protect. And nothing was going to stop her from doing that now. Her lips touched Jack's hair and she held him.
"He knows," she said softly, "that you love him. He knows."
