No, Jack didn't think the rules applied to him, particularly when he had as large of a hero complex as he had. Because he was immortal, his natural instinct was to save those around him. He'd live to fight another day after resurrecting and everyone else would as well -- that was the way of things. But he had tried to save Ianto and, in the end, he had failed miserably.
The screams would haunt him for the rest of his days.
"It is, Rose," Jack said softly, leaning his head into her tender touch. "I promised him I'd always protect him. And here? I couldn't. The wolf gnawed on me like a fucking chew toy and then, after it tossed me aside, it went to him." Jack closed his eyes. "The worst part? Death for him is almost a relief. It was a werewolf that mauled us both. I'm assuming my body will metabolise it like any other poison." Jack trailed off, eyes sliding shut, knowing that Ianto would have lived with that curse.
