Drawing in a shaky breath, Jack could feel another hot tear spill down his cheek, falling onto his shirt. This wasn't how things were supposed to go. Jack had put himself between danger and Ianto and it hadn't been enough. True, the wolf had gone for him but he hadn't been able to contain it.
"'suppose the house is mine, now," Jack said softly, saying whatever came into his mind. He passed the question of what happened momentarily, staring out into space as he drew strength from Rose. His mind kept going back to the park, back to those first moments when they saw the wolf approaching and the sick feeling in the pit of his stomach realising that the last words he'd spoken were chiding -- not loving.
"He wanted to go stargazing," Jack said softly, his cheek resting against the top of her head. Jack tightened his grip on Rose, almost drawing her into his lap. Nothing sexual for once, he just needed the human contact. "I had just chided him for being out without a coat. And then... there was this wolf. It came down on us. I tried to get Ianto to run, trying to distract the wolf. He came after me, that's why half the blood is mine. Mostly healed. But it got to Ianto. And I couldn't get there in time."
