If by 'take care' David meant running as if Satan was chasing them, then that would be the right strategy. Getting into a confrontation with a woman armed with an iron frying pan and a wide assortment of projectiles wasn't something Cal thought they'd survive.

Or writing notes to each other before, during and after class or asking strange question and getting upset when you don't give them the right answer."
Or told them it was a stupid question. His dad once said there were no right answers to stupid questions and it was something Cal agreed with. But apparently nobody ever told that to girls.
