Gnome watch? He quietly pondered on what Cal meant by that as he picked up the coiled red leash and crouched down to attach the end of the leash to the collar. Mr Schubert didn't really like David at first - wouldn't let him do even something small like that - but after his first time here, Mr Schubert didn't seem to mind David so much. He was a big (small?) meanie who wouldn't give him food, but he got attention sometimes and that was enough to place himself on the whitelist.
Cal, however, never seemed to get off the blacklist. Even David could tell that there was some sort of relationship problem going on between them, but he'd leave Cal and Mr Schubert to sort that out between themselves.
Cal's coat was a bit big. Cal's clothes were a bit big in general. David had just showed up on the front door in a t-shirt and ripped jeans, a small cut over his eye and bruises exposed on his arms with goosebumps interspersed between, and he'd been living off Cal's wardrobe since. It admittedly wasn't a very good first impression (and those were so important), showing up to steal a bed and food and clothes. But the old lady didn't seem to mind and neither did Cal.
As soon as the dog heard the rustle of plastic bags and Cal's footsteps approaching, it moved towards and yanked David along over to the door.
