The letter was spread before her on the table, her drink weighing down the top of it, Gwen's left hand anchoring the bottom. She read it again, for the fiftieth time in two days: Miss Stacy, we are pleased to inform you that your application has been accepted... Once more, the butterflies in her stomach took flight -- at the beginning of January she would move to Oxford, England, a student of molecular medicine on a scholarship that would, if she were lucky and talented enough, last through the end of her university days. But she wouldn't plan that far ahead. It was enough to know, for now, that she wouldn't be home until late May or early June. Six months, and then she would be able to think further into the future. But first she needed to tell Peter. That she hadn't told him that she was even applying for the scholarship wasn't something she was proud of. The truth was that she hadn't known how to tell him, or how to even bring up this wall that had been growing between them. Gwen's emotions felt as fragile as spun glass, on the verge of shattering whenever she thought about him, thought about her dad, thought about leaving New York. She wanted to leave, but it was too late; Peter was settling into the seat across from her, and it was too late to put away the letter and settle her face into neutrality. The smile she gave him was nervous instead, and bashful, proud of herself for the remarkable accomplishment she'd achieved. "Hi, Peter." |
