Re: pharma company monies
Elsewhere, someone said they would be posting about NYU's campaign in one of the MFI forums (I'm not a member, so my access to their site and forums is extremely limited). I do get their newsletters, but never saw any mention. I had planned on contacting PsySR, PsyACT, and others, but there wasn't time, as the situation has now changed somewhat.
If you haven't been following it, NYU halted the "Ransom Notes" campaign due to the widespread negative reaction, and promised to consult with the disability/self-advocacy communities in the future (I'll believe that when I see it). Still, the essential message has not been heard. The outcry is not about "hurt feelings," as Koplewicz would have the world believe. It's about the systematic dissemination of pervasive social prejudice that destroys lives on a moment-to-moment, day-to-day, and life-long basis.
One would think such accomplished experts in psychiatry and clinical psychology would have no trouble grasping the dynamics of that, yes? But, obviously, such has almost never been the case. And, unfortunately, the opposition to NYU has, in my opinion, largely missed the most profound relevance underlying their own objections. They are on much more solid ground than most of them realize. But they need to become aware of that, in no uncertain terms, in order to really become a force for change.
