It was snowing, which wasn't strange for early November in the mountains of Hokkaido. The smell of miso soup filled the house, and the fire burned in the main rooms of the old, temple style mountain home of the Yoshida's. It warmed Shiro to the core, sitting outside of his room wrapped in a winter kimono and just enjoying the beauty of his families mountain get away.
He heard foot steps to the right and looked up to see his mother, her long black hair braided and falling neatly over her shoulder contrasting against the dark red of her own winter garb. "You seem to be enjoying yourself." she said as she sat two bowls of steaming miso soup and two cups of tea between them before sitting down herself. Shiro nodded and looked back towards the grey sky, "Hai okka-san. It is peaceful here. Much better than the city." He picked up the cup of tea and sipped it, smiling at the warmth and wonderful flavor. His mother always did make the best tea.
"Hai. I enjoy it more here. You can actually make a coherent thought without the sound of some car horn going off or someone shouting out on the street." His mother smiled over at him, and he smiled back at her. It was times like these Shiro was happy to have his mother around, even if she did pry a bit to much into his personal life. She knew he was gay, and accepted it much better than his father had. Maybe it was because deep down she had always wanted a girl, even though Shiro was far from the flamboyant and girly man his mother sometimes seemed to want him to be. The sky was darkening, but the snow kept falling in it's calm manner, as if wanting to set a relaxed and peaceful mood for the otherwise always business like family.
"Dinner is almost done, if you would like to come eat with us." She said, giving Shiro the option to stay out here and continue his blissful alone time. He nodded his head and stood, picking up the tray of tea and soup before holding out his hand to help his mother up. "I would enjoy that very much, okka-san." He said, giving her a million dollar smile. She took his hand and stood, and together they walked to the main dining hall of the house. His father sat waiting at the table already, and he smiled as the two walked in. Shiro smiled back, and his mother walked over, kissing her husband on the cheek.
The perfect picture of a regular Japanese family, and it was more than Shiro could have ever wanted.
