As the people began to take their seats, they went through the opening steps of a trial. Everyone was sworn in, and the prosecution was able to give an opening statement. The weasel looking lawyer for the state told the story differently than it had really happened.
"Your Honor. Today we come together to decide where the line is on government and mutant interaction. Our ranks have decided to fund a super human team, that would be our first defense against terrorism across the United States. These men and women are legends. Steven Rogers. Captain America. Tony Stark. Iron Man. Thor. Claimed Norse God of Thunder. These men are to protect us from threats a normal person could not withstand." The lawyer paused, since he was walking across the room, to address the judge correctly.
"Instead, when a known Mutant Terrorist, Calling himself Magneto, attacked American bases these men helped them escape. They chose their side, and now they have to answer. Who are they with? The American People, or those who would harm innocent soldiers?" And with that, the lawyer went and sat at the table across from the Avengers.
Soon, Nick Fury stood, looking to the judge. "Your Honor, what Mr. Fitzgerald says may be true. My men did help Magneto in his attack on Government property. But this was because a wild card agent had kidnapped Charles Xavier for information on the Mutants." For this reason, they were in government trial. No jury, just a judge and the people who were directly effected by the attack. "Was what our men did considered Justice? Charles Xavier runs a school. He is teaching the mutants to control themselves, and integrate into society, by means of peace. These men helped him, not Magneto. Surveillance shows that my men didn't kill anyone on purpose. They were doing their job. Officially, we aren't claiming what Mr. Stryker did, so why should they pay for it." And with that, Patchy took his seat.
As silence sat in the court, the Judge looked at Tony and Steve. "Both are very good arguments. On one side, these men helped attack American soil. The government isn't sure where we sit on the mutant problem...so far. On the other hand, you were rescuing a man who had no business being tortured for information. But I would like to hear the opinions of the ones involved. I understand this...Thor isn't present. So that leaves the other two. Mr. Stark, Mr.Rogers. How do you see this event happening?" The judge paused and looked at the two men. This would be televised later, but after the sensitive material had been edited out. Some government secrets couldn't be allowed to the public.
