Clark adjsuted his glasses as he made his way into the bullpen where all the reporters were at work typing up stories and some even using police scanners for there glimps of superman. he stormed into her cubical dropping some papers sh had on a shelf. he scurried to pick it up. "um Lois Perry said your going to Gotham? or Arkahm he said it was....Um it would have been nice to tell me you know..."
Lois sighed. She knew it was only a matter of time before Clark found out about her accepting reassignment. It was also not difficult to make the assumption that he would be rather upset about it. She didn't need to hear from another person- let alone him- how dangerous it was to go to Gotham in it's current state of upheavel. Continuing to pack her belongings, she looked up at Clark and shrugged. "I only decided this morning, Clark. What do you want me to say?"
He kept his head down as he helped her pack up her gear holding her box. "So soon? I mean I thought we partners?" he didnt like this, he had asinking feeling in his gut. "I-I can still go with you It wont take me long to pack up my laptop..."
Lois turned toward him and gave a small, sad smile. She leaned her hand on his cheek. "Listen, Smallville... Gotham's a tough town, I know- but I'm a big girl and I can take care of myself, ok? Besides, someones gotta keep an eye on Metropolis and keep on the look out for Superman." she lowered her hand and looked around her desk nostalgically. "You need to take care of the Planet and everyone while I'm gone. Especially Jimmy." she turned back and sat on her desk, crossing her legs. "This isn't goodbye, you know. I'll be back as soon as Mayor Sharpe comes to his senses."
Clark didn't trust it, but he nodded holding her box full of her stuff. "I know I just Its REAL dangerous Lois and you have a habit of falling off buildings and I just well I don't tihnk I mean it seems like the city is tearing itself apart and well I just I want you to be ok you know. Planet will fall apart with you here to keep the story's coming." He studdered and kept his usual composure in all honesty he was worried about Bruce and his family. They were the one group doing everything to keep the city in some semblence of order...
Looking taken back when Clark mentioned the bit about her falling off buidlings, Lois chose not to comment on the insult and took the box of her belongings into her arms. "Look, I already assured Perry that if things got too difficult, I'd high-tail it outa there, ok? I'll be writing while I'm there, for the Planet so don't worry about the paper, I'm sure Perry had his own interests shoving me in the middle of a war zone but I agreed to the case. I can handle it. Maybe it's luck, maybe it's fate but no matter how many situations I've found myself in, I'd somehow found a way out, right?" she smiled, leaned in and gave Clarke a kiss on the cheek. "It's been great workin' with ya, Smallville but I'm not so great at goodbyes. Let's call it a 'See Ya Later'." With that, she winked and headed passed him, toward the exit.
With a blink she was gone, Lois was a force of nature it was somthing that he suppsed that made him love her that much more. She never doubted much or feard anything. She left and two minutes later he was in the air watching skies for her plane. He tracked it down and fallowed her keeping to the skies. The city was nearly in flames and the sounds of sirens filled the skies. He thought the city was over run...howbad had it been.? He knew Bruce would never ask for help. not his style. He was still shocked and worried now for lois and Bruce as well.
A private jet, huh? Not too shabby. Lois sat comfortably at a desk near the left side windows and had began to start her first article for the Daily Planet. She read up on some of the events leading up to the development of Arkham City. She had the end of her pen between her plump lips, twirling it playfully as she read and took notes regarding Mayor Sharpe's biography. Only a half hour more and she would be landing. It was then the pilot of the plane stepped into the cabin and sat in front of her.
"Mr.Sharpe asked me to go through the security protocol with you." he explained, looking stressed. "Lastly, I want to make sure you're sure you want to go through with this." Putting down her pen and sitting back casually, Lois nodded. "Alright then..." he continued. "There will be an armored car waiting for you at the airport along with military personnel to assist you into the city. Should you wish to leave you must contact Mayor Sharpe directly. There will be no other way out once inside. There's also a few wavers for you to sign-" he spoke placing a pile of papers on the table. "Just saying it was of your own accord to be left inside and Gotham City is not responsible should anything happen to your well-being." he explained, rubbing his eyes. "You'll be staying at a jailed safe-house near the border... and for the record, on a personal note... I think you're positively insane."
Clark was still hating the fact that she was going into this warzone. But ever being her guardian angel He stood over her above in the skyline of the city. He was watching go with someone from the mayors office. He was amazed to see national guard troops moving in. Not to his surprise the country wasn't in war time so the guard was under the mayors command.
He kept in the air moving with her as she moved below him, He checked everything she entered using his x-ray vision to scan for anything from a knife to a dirty bomb. He would let her know he was here when she got to her room...He was hoping not to make an appearance before then.
“Ok.” Lois looked up and nodded, handing the pilot back the paperwork with a serious but casual expression. She was rather impassive, unreadable- ever the professional.
“One last thing, Ms.Lane.” the pilot spoke, reaching into his pocket. He lifted his hand back onto the table and when he did a metal cluck sounded. Looking downward, Lois furrowed her brow. A gun? “The Mayor insisted on you carrying this while you were stationed in Arkham. I suggest you carry it with you at all times.” With that the man stood with the stack of papers and walked away. For the first time Lois was touched with a cold chill that traveled up her spine. She reached out and took the handgun in her fingers- standard grade, just like the Metropolis and Gotham Police carried but did she even know how to use one? For the first time she held a gun in her hand wondering what it felt like when it went off. For the first time she wondered… what had she gotten herself into?
* * * * *
Arkham was quiet. Too quiet. Did the criminals sleep during the day? Was there an underground war raging that she didn’t know about? Was this the calm before a horrific storm and the armored car in which she rode was about to be exploded into a million tiny pieces? She tried not to think about it but satiated herself with staring out the front windshield, writing frantically about the appearance of the city, where exactly in Gotham it was located, the state of the buildings, the complete disarray, the pollution, graffiti. She couldn’t help but notice the pounding of her heart and the lump caught in her throat.
It was a short ride to the safe-house, and of that she was grateful. The suspense was palpable and her chaperones appeared as if they couldn’t wait to get the hell out of there as quick as possible- something that only made her more nervous. Once they departed with further annoying gestured like “Good Luck, Lady.” And “I’d hate to be you.” Lois examined the innards of her lodgings which were pleasingly accommodating. She contented herself with adding a few homey touches; setting up her lap top, notebooks, references and the like, then she began to unpack her clothes. It was only when she felt a breeze at her back did she turn toward the window cautiously. She couldn’t remember opening it… no, in fact she had made the decision to secure it instead. Walking slowly toward the billowing curtains, Lois’ mind flashed to the handgun she attached to her ankle. She lifted her arms and closed the window and turned with a start.
Superman! Pressing a hand to her chest in relief she took a deep breath. She placed her hands on her hips. “Don’t you ever use the door?” she asked with a smirk.
He fallowed her all the way to the safe house, A few men in clown masks armed with missiles aimed at the armored car. They only saw a blur and there weapons dropped into the ground while they where dropped off at the police station wrapped in a metal tube.
He kept guard on the truck as they kept moving keeping her safe, There was another car tailing them but there was a sudden burst of the engine as if the transmission blew.
Then she pulled the curtain to find him just outside her window. "Well...There is always a hi." he smiled teasing her. "How was your trip? Heard you up and left Metropolis. Hope I didn't scare you off." he smiled keeping his arms folded on his chest.
"You startled me." Lois said simply, in a rather accusatory tone. "But... Hi." She blushed slightly, taking a step back and sitting on the bed behind her. She was silly for being so jumpy. "What- what are you doing here?" she asked, genuinely interested, crossing her ankles. It was more often than not that Superman's presence meant trouble- never the less, she couldn't help but look forward to their meetings. The man literally swept her off of his feet but why was he in Arkham, why now? Was he going to warn her about how dangerous the situation was too?
She scoffed, crossing her arms over her chest when he asked if he had scared her off. "I don't rattle that easily, tough guy." she said, watching him. "I'm on assignment. Arkham City is a big story." she shrugged, opening her suitcase and showing Superman the latest Globe newspaper headline. "Insanity City." She was quite sure he'd seen it but in case he hadn't heard the news, Arkham City was now a divisionary war zone.
The way Superman asked how her trip was, somehow she knew he had followed. She turned her head, her eyes narrowing a bit. "My trip was uneventful, thanks to you." she smirked. "You want to tell me why you tail me every where I go, Supes?" she asked, standing up and walking toward him with a suspicious gleam in her eye.
The smile on his lips cracked on his face as she gave him the full 21. He kept floating as she sat on the bet. "Here to do a few things, Help a friend and make sure your ok." The wind blew letting his classic hair style shift ever so slightly. "I'm always around Lois...you know that."
He knew that this wasn't going to scare her not in the least. "Well I know no matter what I say your just going to dive into this head first so the best thing I can do...is float around." He teased back.
Lois smiled softly. "Well..." she spoke, looking up at him as he drifted closer. "I may be brave but I'm not stupid. I can appreciate how dangerous this assignment is... It's nice to know you'll be near by." The look in her eyes was intent and suddenly she was overwhelmed with the urge to reach forward and touch him, for her hands to touch his warm, strong hips. She bit her bottom lip, trying to hold her composure, thinking of her case. She was torn, half of her thought she couldn't afford to be distracted... the other half acknowledged how hard she'd been working and how badly she wanted him... deserved him...
The woman sighed and stood, walking over to the mini refrigerator near the end table of her bed. Taking out a small bottle of champagne she opened the cork with a bang and smiled, pouring them a glass to share. "Happy New Year, Superman." she spoke, softly and earnestly without her usual air of sarcasm. "Let's hope..." somehow, she couldn't bring herself to say 'let's hope it's a good one'. Probably because odds were, it wouldn't be- no, not in Arkham City. Such circumstances promised nothing but continual life threatening danger. "Let's hope for the best." she spoke, taking a sip after smiling somewhat uneasily. Let's hope for survival, she added to herself, swallowing the pleasantly bubbly liquor.
