At first, when the kid seemed like he was going to disagree, Maes was already starting to pout. It didn't take that pout long to turn into a wide grin, however, when Touji agreed to spend time with Gracia. He was practically gushing joy from the ears and wiggled a bit with excitement. "Oh, that would be so wonderful! Gracia really is the most amazing cook, though she probably wouldn't say so. She's far too modest about things like that. I never went hungry a day and she always made the most delicious apple pies."
When he saw the smile back on the kid's face, Maes knew he had won him over. Good. Kids these days had seen far too much trouble and war. This kid didn't seem any different and it saddened him. Even someone like Winry had been through far too much and he felt like Winry was his own daughter most of the time. At least, that's how he thought of the young woman. And that was all it took for the kid not to be upset any more. He knew the kid had his heart in the right place, but maybe explosions weren't the right thing to do just then.
"Something better than flowers?" Maes repeated cheerfully, grinning still from ear to ear. "Perfect! It'll just have to be my surprise then. So, when are you going to bring this present to them, Touji?" Maes asked happily, unable to keep that positive tone out of his voice. He was grateful that the kid seemed to realize what was happening. Besides, at the very least, Gracia could help him keep an eye Touji too. And his wife would have more company. It was really a win-win all around.
