Order meeting

Date: the 8th of June, 1981
Location: the home of Sturgis Podmore

The meeting begins with Dumbledore greeting everyone, but even he seems a little more clipped than usual. He hints that there's a guest who will arrive shortly, and then begins by stating that a clue has been provided by the tipper. An item of great importance to the Order's cause allegedly lies within Hogwarts walls and Dumbledore assigns James Potter, Peter Pettigrew, Remus Lupin, and Sirius Black to investigate. The only information they're provided is that it's an item of dark magic, which always leaves traces.

Regulus is then called forth with a simple, one-line introduction to the Order members present. Anticipating a strong reaction from some, Dumbledore requests that overt reactions to his presence be withheld until the meeting is over.

The meeting is called to an end, but Dumbledore requests that Aurors and Hit Wizards/Witches remain for a small discussion with Regulus. He asks Regulus for the locket to show to those present, but does not take the locket from him permanently. Dumbledore explains that the locket is one horcrux of many that he suspects Voldemort has made, but that he needs to research the matter further and that this matter should not be discussed with anyone outside of those in the small meeting. He requests that everyone keep an eye out for any dark activity, particularly from the Death Eaters, that they might come across.

Everyone is then free to depart. Dumbledore himself gives Regulus reassurances that he will continue to live under wards and can remain in hiding if he wishes. If not, further arrangements can be made. He also asks Regulus to keep the locket safe for now until such a time that it's needed again.

James remained usually quiet throughout the meeting. He was pleased to be selected for something so important, but frustrated that in his opinion Dumbledore was holding something back. His gut feeling told him there was more danger to the task then was being mentioned. A saving grace was that Lily wasn't selected to go.

Upon Regulus making his appearance, James's eyes widened. This confirmed to him that Dumbledore must have known he was alive sooner, or perhaps all along? James feels as if the Order should have had chance to state their opinions on bringing Regulus into a meeting of theirs. After all, how can Dumbledore know where his true loyalties lie?

James calls the Marauder's and Lily over to him after the meeting has finished, to find out what his friend's real opinions were of the meeting. His frustration is clear, but knows he should be able to trust Dumbledore's judgement. He turns to Lily and Remus for advice on how to begin figuring out how to track these 'traces' this item of dark magic would have left - and hear any thoughts on why Dumbledore might need it.

You can read about Regulus's inner-monologue here, if you're interested in his actual thoughts about the meeting, the attendees, and the situation.

In summary, Regulus has more-than-likely been very quiet throughout the meeting, doing much of the listening, and much of the quiet-arrogance-glaring that his dear father would be absolutely proud of. He is likely to keep to himself, speaking when spoken to, and answering questions only if prompted by Dumbledore (especially about the last part of the meeting / about the possession of the horcrux. Feel free to have your characters inquire! -- and hit a brick wall.) Clearly, he's not there to make friends. He would also have no qualms with stating, very bluntly, that he has the Mark; just so that everyone achieves general consensus on that little fact. Good? Good, now shut up about it!

Please note, however, that his general demeanour is likely to be much colder, and more polite than over the journals (not that he would identify himself openly as R.A.B., mind) -- which may be somewhat surprising. Your characters are unlikely to be subject to friendly snark -- or a smile. Is he on his guard? Oh yes, and it's apparent.

► Sirius, you get most of his attention, although he's trying very hard not to let it show. Naturally.

► James, Lily, Remus, Peter, Severus, Minerva, etc -- he recognizes you (and may seem a touch surprised, too). And whereas he is attempting to cast the Avada Kedavra with his gaze alone on Potter for a split moment, he will be surprisingly professional otherwise.

► To the Aurors/Hit Witches/Wizards: If your character is extremely observant, they will notice that Regulus is uneasy with having people fondle interact with the Locket, and that he would be relieved to have it back (and will promptly slip it around his neck, under his robes and out of sight). This would not be blatantly obvious, as it would almost be at the level of micro-emotions, but you're free to notice/comment upon it! Just putting it out there.

Regulus is likely to remain in hiding, at least from the Death Eaters. He will not go parading about that he is alive without a good reason, because he is not suicidal. But he is extremely bored, and extremely dissatisfied with the manner in which events are unfolding. Therefore, if Dumbledore has any specific requests from him, he would make it plain that he will hear them and likely comply to them; this is implicit.

So, hm. Unless otherwise prompted, he is very likely to get himself a glass of water as an excuse to linger about for a few moments and listen on others' chitchat as best he can, then depart quite promptly. Yep.

Towards the beginning, Alice gave updates on potential Death Eaters, Dark wizards and witches that the Auror Department had been after/keeping an eye on since the last meeting. This is one of those things that falls under shades of gray and what could potentially become an identity crisis for her. Her job as an Auror says that she should turn in the entirety of the Order without fall, confess her own doings with them, and accept the consequences.

But there is Neville and Frank and Tyler. There is the prophecy. There is the fact that while the Aurors are legally able to use the Unforgivables, their hands are slowly being tied with what they can and cannot do, thanks to the politics that permeates her job. Holding the hand of her husband underneath the table, she allows a second of shock to overcome her face before shoving it away at the introduction of Regulus Black. She feels as James does, that Dumbledore should have checked with the Order as a whole about bringing in Regulus before actually doing it.

The introduction of the locket Horcrux has Alice exchanging a look of surprised confusion with Frank, who looks exasperated, at the fact that a.) Dumbledore hasn't taken it from Regulus, b.) it hasn't been destroyed, c.) that the Potters haven't been made aware of this since they also are greatly involved with this, thanks to the Prophecy. Both of the Longbottoms are aware of what constitutes a Horcrux. Alice keeps her mouth shut until the end of the meeting when it's just the Longbottoms and Albus and then she explodes at him. She is upset over the fact that Dumbledore had been hiding two very important details but the larger aspect is Alice getting rid of her frustrations and anger over everything going on in her life as a whole.

Frank and Alice end up going out of the room where the meeting was held to see who was left to see if they needed to talk to anyone there before going home.

Lily sat attentive for most of the meeting, leaning slightly forward in her chair and idly playing with her wedding ring. When the Marauders were all assigned a task, she frowned slightly but covered it almost at once; of course her natural impulse would be to want to go along, but there was Harry to think of, and besides, those four knew the castle better than anyone else. She took James' hand and gave it a gentle squeeze when Dumbledore explained the assignment, simultaneously communicating "congratulations" and "be careful, numpty".

When Regulus was introduced, Lily sat up straighter and narrowed her eyes, then looked immediately to Sirius. She understands what it's like to have an estranged sibling, though obviously this is a far more grave situation, and she is less than pleased that Dumbledore didn't at least warn Sirius, if no one else. Of course, though, she trusts Dumbledore in regards to Regulus' presence in the Order, and assumes he must have some reason for including him.

At the end of the meeting, Lily follows James and the Marauders to discuss the evening's events with them.

Dorcas would have listened to all of the information but she would have moved in her chair and not have held back if she had a comment or question. She would have openly questioned how a dark item could be in Hogwarts and how it could not have been found.

She would not have known who Regulus was so her reaction would not be a surprise. As well, she would not have known what a horcrux was so she would have asked about that. She also would have asked why Dumbledore did not keep the locket.

Sirius was on edge for much of the meeting, though he tried not to let that show. He'd had too many things running through his mind in the days leading up to it, so when he and the other Marauders were assigned to track something down in Hogwarts, he didn't immediately react in any particular way. If his mind were less occupied with questionable suspicions, he would have grinned rakishly and been quite thrilled to revisit the location of the Marauders' prior great conquests.

Regulus's appearance started a cold trickle down the back of his neck. He wanted to bolt out of his seat wedged between James and Remus and scream, growl, even hug the damn bastard. His younger brother's appearance confirmed that Sirius hadn't been losing it when he'd first seen the initials R.A.B. in the journals. But Dumbledore anticipated him; when the old wizard gave him that look over his half-moon spectacles, Sirius felt his jaw harden and his teeth suffer from the gnawing that he couldn't control for the remainder of the meeting. He was faintly aware of the steadying hand that Remus had placed upon his shoulder.

After the meeting was over, an immutable urge to drag Regulus aside was immediately tamped down by James pulling him and the rest of their group off to the side. Sirius growled out his frustrations and dragged his hand through his otherwise immaculate hair, reminiscent of their Hogwarts days he couldn't control his overwhelming emotions. He grudgingly shoved aside thoughts of his wayward brother and tried to express some semblance of the happiness that he should feel about getting this Hogwarts assignment with his closest friends. Sirius only vaguely acknowledged that Lily wasn't to join them, but he did think that Dumbledore had Harry's best interest at heart with that particular decision.

No matter what else his friends might have said or thought, he still couldn't get Regulus out of his mind.

As usual, Peter does nothing during the meeting besides look between his friends and wonder what Remus was thinking about this 'guest'. Upon the instruction that the Marauders had to go to Hogwarts, Peter's heart sank a bit and knew that it was not going to be a fun time but kept his displeasure to himself and nodded his head expectantly- Dumbledore asks, Dumbledore receives.

When Regulus comes in, Peter absolutely freezes: This man was supposed to be dead. He was quick to look at Sirius, then James and then finally at Remus, trying hard to find a reaction that he found comforting. He then settled on himself and gave Regulus a flick of the fingers as if to say 'hello' and went back to staring at his hands.

When the meeting is called to an end, Peter was quick to stand by his friends and not say much: this was a time when he was absolutely best at observing.
