New ads test

Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
In an ongoing effort to help may InsaneJournal more financially stable, we are testing some new ads. Please immediately report any issues you have with them so we can resolve them asap. We understand they are undesirable, but we are still struggling with advertising revenue and are trying to see what we can do to improve it.

Thanks for your understanding.
  • other than it being utterly annoying, i'm not having any problems with it so far
  • Honestly? The new ads scared me into thinking I'd gotten something on my computer, because the last time I had ads like that it was because something had installed on my computer without me knowing about it.
  • Every time I make a comment, the new ads cause IJ to freeze and crash. I have to start with a new window every time I make a comment.
  • I'm just curious what the heck they are advertising? They look like spam pop-ups to me. They don't appear to be advertising anything useful. I'm not anti-advertising, necessarily, and I understand that you need to raise revenue. But like the above commenter My first thought was that my computer was infected with something because that's what it LOOKS like.

The placement is annoying, and they aren't even advertising anything that I would ever in a thousand years look at. I'm afraid TO click on it because I honestly don't know what I'd be taken to.

Again, I'm not opposed to advertising, but these particular advertisements just make the site look low-quality and trashy, in addition to raising my anxiety about whether or not I'm using a website that's going to cause damage to my computer. :/
  • You shouldn't be struggling with money since I'm one of the seemingly many who pay money for renames and never get them. While support tickets go unanswered.
  • i agree completely with the person above me. i really thought my computer had some type of malware until i realized it was the site itself. i definitely don't think these ads are the answer. these ads make me want to find a new site.
  • could you put perm accounts back on sale? i lost one in the purge and i'm not used to seeing ads at all
  • Do you think you'll have a perm account sale again soon?
  • Personally, I don't mind them. They aren't on every single page, and when they do show up, for me it's just a black bar with a "close ad" option - easy to get rid of.
  • it wouldn't be so bad if it didn't pop up every. single. time i change pages.
  • It makes it difficult to click anything where the adds are placed.
  • have you thought about a sale on paid accounts, let the users help fund the site? if you put them on sale it could be a way of also refunding those of us that have paid accounts and half of the time can't access ij during the paid time to use it because the site is down. if you discount paid and permanent accounts as well as renames, you might be surprised how many people want to buy them and support the site still.
  • I usually shy away from complaining, but these adds are really annoying. Every time I change to a different page, specifically after saving a post, a completely black bar pops up on the bottom of the page. It's easy enough to pay for a perm. account on one, but as a role-player, I can't afford to get rid of ads on every account. Are the 'bottom of the page' ads necessary?
  • Add me in as one of the ones who understands the need for advertising, but considers the placement/look of the ads to be troubling. I'd prefer more ads on the sides or embedded in the page versus these malware-chic pop-ups.

    Thank you for listening.
  • unrelated to the ads, which aside from being an eyesore, are working fine for me (i'm concerned about how they'll effect those of us who are mobile a great deal of the time, though) i was curious - does IJ have a donations button anywhere? perhaps if you considered opening up to donations or starting a kickstarter where the members of the insanejournal community could support you, it can help take care of some of the financial issues you're dealing with temporarily. i understand it'd be only a quick fix to an ongoing issue, but any help is good help. i know most members see this website as their home, and i bet you'd have a lot of support if it meant the site would be running as close to optimally as possible again.
  • <3333333333333333333333333333333 Thanks for everything :)
  • Does clicking on the ads generate more income for the site?
  • Ugh, I agree with others that the new ad style is weird and kind of intrusive. I can see why people might think at first that it was malware. ("Click to start download"? of what? there was no other text and no identifying images.)

I like Project Wonderful and I keep it whitelisted in my adblocker. Hell I even click on those ads sometimes. But whatever this other network is, yuck.
  • They're taking up about half my page most of the time. It's maddening. Anyway to make them stick to bottom and stay there?
  • I'm joining the chorus of people who thought they had got infected with something when they saw the new ads.

These ads are intrusive and skeevy, and I do not want them on my browser. I keep ads on when I'm assured they are from safe places (re: Project Wonderful) to support the site, but I don't feel safe with these, and the fact I can't adblock them makes me even more wary. I love IJ and I have a lot of stuff and memories here, but the latest changes have made me feel really unwelcome. The safety of your users should come here. Please do change the provider of the ads.

A kickstarter as suggested upperwards in the thread would be a good temporary solution to support the site.
  • Why won't adblock block them?
  • It wouldn't be so bad if they were just ads, but every one I have experienced looks and acts more like a pop-up.
  • Given that this is to help the site, I can't really begrudge a new type of ad system to much. It's not even too terrible most of the time since it's only on some pages. However, like many others, I thought it was some sort of malware at first. Even when I realized it wasn't, I've found myself not liking this ad company at all. A lot of the ads look pretty skeevy to start with and given the advertising style and the design of them I'm worried that sooner or later I'm going to run across a flashing ad that might trigger me into an absence seizure, or at least a really annoying headache. Normally for sites like this I prefer to keep my ad blocker down; it's lots of text, the ads won't give me a headache let alone an absence seizure, and I know it can use the extra boost from ads. But if this particular ad system stays up and I can't be sure of the design styles (the flashing) and therefore my own health, I'll have to put my adblocker back up and I'd really like not to do that. Is there some other ad system you can try out, maybe?
  • I can understand needing ads. I have no problem with them as a source of revenue. However, this new one is just downright distracting. It shows up as a massive black bar, and it does look like malware. I got nervous at first, too, and I actually came looking for a news post to make sure I didn't have to run scans on my computer. What the ads are doesn't really matter if the delivery system is terrible. I'm not a fan of overlay ads in general as they tend to get in the way and the close buttons are known to glitch at times. So, yeah... not a fan of this particular one. It's a major turn off.
  • I have to agree with the others. I love this site, so I don't mind the adds, but when they pop up like malware adds do it looks more and more like the site is a threat rather than that you're just testing out adds. It also is extremely upsetting that I can't find any program to block them so I have to have them pop up every time I refresh a page to do something. It's not just that it's undesirable, I wouldn't care if they were done at the bottom of the page or something like the others, but we should be able to block ones like that if we don't want to see them. That's why I installed a pop up blocker to begin with, I didn't want random pop ups.
