It appears that some number of userpics may have been lost. We had a disk failure though we did not expect to have any userpic loss as they are supposed to be replicated over several disks. However we have received a report of a user who has lost some userpics. We are looking into why they weren't. We are very sorry for the inconvenience that this has caused.

    I've lost 50+ icons across several journals; recently-made journals were not affected, but my older ones (couple years+) were definitely hit.

    I've lost 73. :(
    Thank you for keeping us informed, and would you let us know if/when you figure out if they'll return on their own or if we'll have to try to retrieve them on our own? Thanks!

    Chiming in, in case it helps narrow down the issue: the two active accounts of mine that got hit were both created in 2010 (August and October respectively), and the icons that disappeared were uploaded roughly around the same time.

    Thanks for reporting this. I lost quite a few on this account, and some on a bunch of my others (at least 4 other accounts), and so have some of my friends.

    I understand that it must cost a lot to run this site, especially with as many icons as you host for free. Please let us know if there's anything we can do to help. I'll donate toward drive space, even though I can't spare much.

    Weird (maybe?) that all the comments here report loss, and no counterexamples. Well, I haven't lost any userpics, FWTW...

    hey, this was an easy way for me to get rid of some icons in accounts without room for new ones. it's hard for me to decide what ones to delete, but not hard when all i see is a little red x. i'm not complaining

    I lost a few on this account, and several across several RP accounts. :| Keep us updated on if you can get them back. I have all my icons backed up on my computer, so I didn't lose them, but that is a lot of tedious uploading and replacing to get them back.

    Huh. Well thanks for keeping us updated.

    Hopefully it's not permanent.

    Not sure if it helps any but my account is:

    - Created in 2007

    - Permanently Insane plus Extra Userpics

    - Updates fairly frequently.

    - 54 icons out of 370 are gone.

    Just adding my voice; I've lost icons over four accounts. All the accounts were pre-July 2012, if that helps at all.

    Things happen and we're only human using human-based technologies. I'm sure you'll do the best you can to recover anything that is lost.

    Just went through all my accounts, and save for the one I did a total icon overhaul with just last month, every single one is missing at least a few. Most are somewhere between a quarter to half, some are three quarters gone. 17 accounts to fix... so right now I'm just praying they come back since I'm not TOTALLY sure I still have the icons to replace the ones lost in the older accounts. Please keep us posted, Squeaky! And as always, thank you for all your hard work.

    Jumping in to say that I've lost about 225 icons on this account, if my count was accurate.

    I'm pretty sure that I have them all backed up somewhere else on one of my hard drives, but I really hope I don't have to upload them all again. As a person with Insane Userpics, the upload interface gets REALLY difficult when you have more than about 1000 icons.

    So I'll just cross my fingers that you can recover them and will wait to hear news.

    If you've lost userpics here on IJ, but you've been using the asLJ client app for Mac, you might have backups of your userpics, cached on your computer by asLJ. Check in ~/Library/Caches/us.2718.asLJ/LJUserpicCache, for files named www.insanejournal.com.userpic.[pic number].[user id number].

    Hey, just offering some more data, just in case. Newest account from June 2012 has no loss. All other accounts have userpic loss, including this one which was made February 2008 and is permanent.
