Looks like we are out of the woods with the attacks that were happening. As it was said before, I found a few inefficient queries that were being used to take the site down. While I am not sure this was a malicious attack as much as it was spam bots crawling the site, the issue has been mitigated. In fact overall site response times have gotten much better than they were before the attacks.
