Site Slowness

Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
I just want to post here and apologize for the recent slowness some of you have been experiencing. We are aware of this issue and its cause. Our primary load balancer went over its monthly bandwidth allotment so we had to reconfigure the way the site runs. I was hoping that it wouldn't be noticeable, but alas, it is running very slow at times.

Unfortunately there isn't much we can do about this until the billing cycle starts over in about a week. So until then I am going to have to just let you know that the site will be running slow.

We are already taking steps to keep this from happening again. So after we get things going again, we wont run into this problem in the future.

Also we might be switching hosting providers in the future due to this issue. And if we do we will be doing a fund raising drive on the site. We haven't worked out details yet, but we will let you know well ahead of time.
  • S'ok Squeaky we still love you}:)
  • It's okay. I barely had time to wonder if I should check twitter for a maintenance bulletin when my friends page finally loaded with this post right at the top.

::wonders if the fund raising drive will include permanent accounts::

::tucks away money, just in case::
  • Well, knowing that you know about it makes the slowness a bit more bearable. I think we can manage for a week like this. Thank you for keeping us informed as always!
  • Thanks for as always for keeping us to date with what is happening. You are doing a wonderful job.
  • Just tell us what we can do to help, and we're there.

*makes a few dozen pots of virtual herbal tea for everyone*

*taps a bunch of virtual kegs for the folks who want good beer instead of tea*
  • Knowing what is going on is one thing, but knowing that you're making a move toward fixing it is an even better thing.

    Thanks for your diligence, Squeaky.
  • Thank you so much for keeping us in the loop! I'm fine with the site running slow for a bit as long as I know there's a reason why, and that someone is aware of it.

And I will definitely be saving up some money for that (possible) fundraiser. :)

    Long live IJ!
  • Being informed about what's going on really helps you live with whatever the problem is.
  • I thought it'd be my connection, but it's great to know that you guys know about the slowness and are looking into it. (:
  • Our love has overwhelmed your servers!

    Again.
  • Thanks for letting us know Squeaky. I only really noticed the slowness last night so haven't been affected too much by it.
  • If you switch hosting providers will we be starting from scratch? :/ Like, we'll still have our comments, entries, userpics, etc. right? I'm not very familiar with this.

    Thanks for keeping us updated!
  • When or if you change hosting will the site go down or a clean sweep over that we dont notice?

Oh and another idea for drive More layouts for people who pay for there journal.
  • IJ is working nice and fast for me right now, but I have friends in The Netherlands who are unable to get IJ to load. I think they both use different ISPs (one uses UPC). They've tried Firefox, Internet, restarting, everything and it just wont' load. Do you have any ideas? Is this a problem on their end or something with IJ?
  • Oh. Silly bandwidth. I hate when I run out. :) Thanks for the heads up. You're the best! ♥
  • I just have to turn myself in and admit to using up at least half of allocated site bandwidth :D

I think that you are doing marvelous job considering rapid growth of IJ and the recent upgrade. Looking forward to the fund raiser.

  • You mean it's not my ISP being slow? *ponders apologizing to ISP for ranting, then decides not to*

Thanks so much for letting us know! You know, one of the best things about this site is how good you are at keeping us in the loop. We really appreciate it!
And if you ever decide to have IJ virtual gifts that people can purchase for each other, I think it'll help the funding issue. Just sayin'. ;)
  • LOL! When I noticed it last night, my first thought was "What's ElJay done NOW to piss off its customers?"

It's amazing to think that, this time a year ago, you were considering downgrading your hosting plan. So much has changed! I'm definitely putting some money aside in case of the hosting change, and looks like it's time for me to make another account or two from my RP stable into paid accounts. :D

As always, thank you for your diligence and your genuine devotion to the site. That's a rare and wonderful thing.
  • Totally off-topic, but are you going to be able to fix the quick commenting thing? Because having to reload an entire screen has got to be using bandwidth, not to mention being annoying.
  • Thanks for the heads-up.
  • I second the virtual gifts idea.

    Thanks for keeping us informed.
    *hugs*
  • Thanks for keeping us informed! I was noticing a slight lag earlier, but it seemed to be only certain pages. (I was worried BitDefender was throwing a temper tantrum again or I'd just missed a Windows update or something)
  • I was wondering what was going on... Thanks for letting me/us know!
  • Thanks for the forewarning, and also for continuing to keep us posted.
  • Well, I guess it's a good thing this the last month of my school and I have a ton of crap due. I won't have time to notice. So rock on. I'll just be over here piled high with texts to write a paper and study for my finals soon.
