Purging Old Inactive Accounts

I am starting the process to purge old inactive accounts immediatly. We are defining inactive accounts as accounts who have not had any activity in the past 2 years.

In the first phase I am going to immediately set the status of any inactive accounts who are not validated to deleted. This will give the account owners a period of two weeks to log in and set the accounts back to active. Since these accounts are not validated we do not have a reliable email address to contact the account owner with.

The second part of the first phase will involve emailing any validated but inactive accounts and warning them that their accounts will be set to deleted status in two weeks.

The second phase will occur in two weeks. The first part will be when the deleted accounts are automatically purged and the second part will be to set the status of any inactive but validated accounts to deleted.

The third phase will take place two weeks after phase 2 when the phase 2 deleted accounts are automatically purged by the system.

We will NOT include Self-Committed[paid] or Permanently Insane accounts in the account purge.

What this means is that when an account is purged, it is immediately available for use by an existing account via the use of a rename token. Rename tokens are available in the InsaneJournal Store for $5. If you have any questions or concerns with this process, please raise them in the comments to this post.

    If there's a journal (or two) that we know is well over two (closer to three) years dead, can we give you a nudge to work on them or will they just come when they come? Obviously, I am ready to drop $10 on renames. ;)

    I just bought a rename token for an account that was deleted 14 days ago and was set to be purged today. Do you know when I'll be able to use the token?

      Purges happen once a day at about 3am. If it has not been purged today, please check tomorow.

        sorry for butting in, but is that 3am est or gmt or something else? i've noticed that the website seems to be running on gmt where, for example gj, was on pst. thank you!

          Yes the server is on GMT. I when ahead and manually did the purge.

            i'm asking because the username i really want to use my token for is still deleted, not purged. and i'm on gmt+1, so my concerns are if you're doing the purges at around 3am eastern standard time, because then it means that i'd have to be up before 9am if i want to get the username before someone else does. or if the purges happen at 3am gmt, because then it's 4am here. i hope i'm making sense.

              Yeah, check your username now, it should be purged.

    i noticed that the account [info]maria was created in 2004 but never updated. is there a reason why this has not been deleted and purged?

      because there are other signs if activity on the account. We only got rid of accounts that were inactive.

    Hi :) I was just wondering about the activity of an account I'd like to rename to if/when it gets deleted and purged. I understand that you say there are other ways to check account activity than posting and stuff like that, but this account was created in 04 and has no posts or icons, etc.

    I created an account in 05 with the intention to use it one day, but never did. I thought I was logging in periodically although never made a post in it myself. I don't like journal hoggers so can understand if somebody paid to rename to it (the username is jc) but the account I'm looking at seems to be in a similar state and I was just wondering if there's any chance I could make a donation or something in order to acquire it.

    how do i know if an account is purged and available to use a rename token with? is a journal that hasn't been used in 282 weeks allowed?

      When you go to a journal it would come up with a page stating that it has been deleted and purged.

    I was hoping that I could have an assylum name that has been closed and has not been updated in 44 weeks. Is there a way to do this? Can you help me? Or is it not possible?

    I was going to contact the owner but there is no email and no post to respond to so I can to you.

      If an asylum has been confirmed to be abandoned, maintainership can be transferred with a support request.

    Hey squeaky,

    I have a quick question. Hopefully you'll see this. I was curious as to why the journal [info]hathaway was never purged? Says it was created in 2005, no entries, never updated, etc. Any chance it might be sometime in the future?

    what if you know of an account that hasn't been used in years and you would like it to be purged? because you wanna use your rename took to have it?

    Is there any way to contact you about a username being purged? I found one I'd like to use a rename token for that has never been updated, has posted zero comments, and was created just about two years ago (January 1st will be 2 years).     when will the next purge be? Theres a username I desire but no one is using it. It was created in 2007.

    [info]johansson has not been used at all and has never been updated and was created on Date created: 2005-01-02 12:46:37, is there anyway this can be purged?

    I just recently saw this and came to find out that a lot of my journals were deleted and purged, I have a few that were very important to me, but I've had internet issues a lot in the past few years hense why I wasn't able to make my journals active. Is there anyway this can be fixed without a rename token? I know this is asking A LOT, but I'm seriously heartbroken that my writing is now gone and I didn't get to save or back it up at all :(

    hi! i know this post is extremely old but what’s the status on purging accounts? there is a journal that hasn’t been updated since 8/21/2010 and is not in use so i was wonder if there is a purge coming up at any point?
