Ads and the state of the site

Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
Hey gang!

We know it's been super frustrating for you around here. Right now we are looking at what we can do to get rid of the ads and still keep the site running.

We've decided to move the goalposts for our Patreon to make it possible for us to just shut off ads for everyone. The ads aren't performing as good as we hoped and we can make up the revenue if we can get a few more monthly commitments on our Patreon account.

What we are going to do is implement a new goal of $750/month on Patreon. If we can get that level of commitment from the community we are comfortable not running ads on the site for any logged in user. We are very close to that already sitting at over $700/month. If we get to $1000/month we will shut off ads entirely, even if you aren't logged in.

If you regularly buy rename tokens or other items in our store, you can easily get a $5 or $10 coupon a month, with a $25 commitment we'll give you a $5 bonus and email you a $30 coupon each month. We only charge on our Patreon at the beginning of each month, so if you want to subscribe please have your reward level picked before Halloween!

Thank you all so much for your support!
  • In addition to this we are also still looking into why comments are having issues. We know that is the biggest technical issue we've been having.
    • this really needs to be addressed ASAP. you've been "looking into this" for weeks and radio silence.
      • *ahem*

        • 🤷🏼‍♀️ it’s a known problem. he wants more and more to remove ads and whatnot and won’t actually do anything to upgrade the site or fix issues and does nothing but offer half assed excuses and then deleted comments calling him out for it.
          • That previous thread was screened because it was reaching the point of abuse.

I put in a lot of time on this site, and have maintained and grown it for over 22 years now. There is a point when I try to reason with someone and they just keep attacking that I will shut down that conversation for my own mental health.

I understand your frustration and all the other users frustration with the site right now. The current issues are vastly complex and we need to get to the base issue to understand what is going on (likely a change in browser behavior is driving the issue).

Once the underlying issue is fully understood we will be able to take the corrective action to fix it.
            • first off let me preface all of this by saying i do appreciate what you've done over the years to keep the site up and running. and that the site has been more stable than i've ever seen it since you moved things and i DO appreciate that.

but what is insanely frustrating is a lack of transparency and accountability for things like the comment issue just seem to be ignored. it's been several months now (first comment i see about it is from back in august, and it's now basically november) and nada. not a peep about it. meanwhile i have seven ads on this front main page. this post alone has 4. it's excessive, but it's semi-tolerable since it's doing something for the site, or so you say.

however, the comment issue is huge and it kind of feels like if you ignore it, it'll just go away.. but it won't. for a site that relies on people who like to write, and comment, and communicate, having to refresh, two, three, four, five, six times to post ONE comment.. my friend, that's an issue that needs to be addressed. i don't even want to come to ij anymore because i get frustrated having to refresh over and over and over again to post one scene reply. and since lazarus and typio no longer work, it runs the risk of losing what you're working on and/or having to write it somewhere else and c&p over and over again and hope for the best.

i understand that it's a 'vastly complex' issue that you're working on, but it's one that you haven't really addressed. there's been no real transparency about it, other than comment posted AS A COMMENT in this post addressing it. every other comment from people has been ignored. i, personally, don't feel inclined to give you money through pateron, renames, etc, when the site isn't functional/is more problematic than it's worth - because this comment issue? it does decrease the function of the site.

people are frustrated and honestly, it feels like you're ignoring that and that's not going to keep people here. this is something that should be addressed in a timely fashion - and several months isn't it. and yes, before you say you're a one man show, with a full time job and family, i get that. i respect that. but if you want money to keep the site running and to turn a profit, there needs to be a reason to help, to invest in the future of ij. to maybe one day improved the outdated operating coding and make it a better place all around. but it won't happen if you're not being a bit more transparent with things and addressing the issues at hand.

              just my two cents.
    • Honestly, I think you'd have an easier time convincing people to sign up for patreon if you could at the very least fix the comments issue, but any technical updates would be helpful. At this point, I'm hesitant to send money for a site that isn't working properly.
  • This is good news! I was never bothered by the ads on IJ back in the day, but the ones that are coming up this time around are often really shady. I had one that appeared as a "next" button and for some sleep-deprived reason I thought it was a new part of the UI only visible to logged out users and decided to tap it, and got led to this really weird place that slowed my phone down and hijacked the back button to just keep reloading itself. Luckily, no actual malware got onto my phone, but if was unsettling.
    • Unfortunately our old ad provider went out of business. I really liked working with them too.
      • I was wondering, the old ads were just kind of there, these are a bit odd and sometimes do take over the screen - usually for me I can hit an x or a close button but sometimes it takes a bit to find it!
  • Thanks Squeak.
  • Thank you for all you do!
  • please get rid of the ads, it's why I stopped coming on IJ. I know it's costly to run a website but there has to be a better way. I love this website, it's helped with my depression and anxiety so much....but the ads man. :(
  • Do you have everything you need volunteer-wise when it comes to helping with coding and site stability? I'm just wondering if there are other ways we can also help support the site for those of us light on funds.

Thank you for maintaining this site over the years!
    • We dont really. We are hoping to be in a place to open our code for pull requests from the community. We'd iike to get in line with the DW codebase (which will fix a lot of issues on this site). If we can get there we can really start rebuilding back on the original Open Source nature of what LiveJournal once was.
