Update on SSL

Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
The update to SSL has caused some layouts to have errors.

The issue is most browsers won't load HTTP content from an HTTPS site. If you have custom layers or are using custom CSS that is loaded from off site, or loads images or other content from off site, your problem lies there. You'll need to update your custom code to change any URLs from http:// to https://

If you are having trouble hosting on a secure site, please let me know and I'll see what I can do to assist.
  • Maybe this is hasty considering this update is new, but this doesn't do anything at all on my end. Profile images linked from my host site ([info]buckybear's domain) just won't load.
    • So what is happening is that your browser is refusing to load resources from an insecure site. You need to update your code to reference https rather than http to make these images load.
      • I did try that, and it didn't work, unfortunately. Absolutely nothing happened to help/make the images load. Even changing the entry code to https:// for each image didn't do anything.
    • I noticed that last night on chrome on my phone, on desktop firefox right now and I can see your icons and ~buckybear's
  • That feel when I had a chance to go https on my icons comm when ai was changing post formats and deliberately didn't to save a few characters toward post limits. 🤦‍♀️ Anyone know how much processing overhead it would cause for the host if I just set the .htaccess to rewrite http into https? It's the easiest route, assuming it works the way I think it does, but I don't wanna get kicked off if it's a resource hog. (I'm on dreamhost and have anywhere from 300-700 icons per post, if that matters.)
    • Dreamhost shouldn't have a problem with it. Modern webservers add very little overhead for HTTPS. In fact there is a push to move all web traffic to https so I think they would appreciate it.

FYI for info on how to setup DreamHost for your custom domain.

      • Thank you!

Hilarious fact: I already have the SSL certificate and everything, but deliberately allowed http to still work so I could just go with the flow. At least it's a much easier fix than editing a couple hundred posts to change all the URLs in them!
        • Please post in here if it works so others can do the same thing if needed.
          • Unfortunately, it seems the browser is still picking up that the urls coded into the post are http, and when I right click > view image info, it leads to the http url. Which is weird, because right click > view image gives the correct https version. Not sure if this is just because I use an outdated browser (long story short: HP won't update graphics drivers for my laptop and newer browsers BSOD me) or what, so if you or anyone else wants to see if the images display on modern browsers, here's my most recent icons post.
  • If people need a secure site I can host images for you
  • I've been having trouble accessing the admin console? Not sure if that got boinked in all this? Thanks!
    • Can you please give me details of the problems you are having? Are you getting specific error messages?
      • Ah never mind. I managed to poke around and get it going. I had the bookmark without the https and then I think I missed the / on the end when I did do the https. I'll update my bookmarks/auto fill to the full complete address and that should solve my issues.
  • I'm still having the cookie problem on this journal. Not only does it lose cookies on Avast's browser, but now it's happening on Chrome as well.
    • Is it only on your mod pages? I had issues with mine (not being able to mass delete hold comments, myself and another player got the login cookie issue on the holds and application page). I made a new page (just copy and pasted over all the html from the first one) and have had some people poking at it and everything seems to be working fine there including the deleting. Maybe try that if it's only on those mod page entries you're running into the issue?
      • Yeah, when I try to reply to people in my drop box or comment the welcome link to an application it'll do the cookie thing. Those had been the only problems until last night. When I tried to unscreen two apps, it lost cookies again. I will definitely try your suggestion. Thanks!
  • As soon as I try to select a few comments and delete all at once I get

    Error
    You are not logged in.

I can individually delete them by using the red X but not selecting and hitting delete from the drop down.
