Guys, we have deiced to start using Patreon. We are going to try to build a sustainable income so we can make this site better for all of you. Please let me know what you guys think about this and any rewards you can think of that we could offer. For now we are just looking for recurring monthly income so we can start making the site cheaper and better for everyone.

  • A monthly raffle for a permanent account maybe? At $1 per month it's not a bad gamble from a user perspective and (hopefully) it's not too complicated or expensive on your side to offer it. Especially if there are a good number of patrons every month (or at least more than 40).
  • Maybe a good reward would be to get a rename token? There's a lot of purged journals now, someone might want that as a reward.
  • to piggy back off of the above comments,

$1 - entered into perm account raffle 1 time per month
    $3 - entered into raffle 2x
    $5 - 3x
    $7 - 4x + 1 rename token
$10 - perm account raffle, permanent username pics raffle + 1 rename token
$15 - above + special "patron" status on ij, like self-committed
$20 - above + handwritten note from squeaky thanking them, maybe a polaroid of the server room or something funny
    • I like your idea of a handwritten note, but nobody would be able to read it (that's why I got into computers). They always said I would grow up to be a doctor with my handwriting.

That said I have implemented a number of your ideas (even though slightly differently). I am going to see about coding up the special patron status. I think that's a really cool idea.
      • even if it's not legible, i'm sure people would appreciate it lol
  • could you tell us more about the improvements you want to make? features you want to add? i'd give money not for any kind of reward but just because you're working on goals/features.
    • Right now the improvements we are working on are related to hardware and stability. We have another server that needs to be replaced and we need to get the costs for being able to run a backup in the cloud down. Once we have that squared away we will look into the cost of contracting a developer for developing new features. We will notify when information about this is available.
  • I think setting a goal amount for specific improvements would garner donations! A lot of people around here wanna see this place succeed and would love to see certain upgrades. Within what is reasonable for you, of course.
    • when patreon is back up, check the sidebar on the left. you can scroll through his goals for funding and there are some great things in there about removing ads, lowering the cost of permanent accounts, insane pics, rename packs, etc.

not sure about the rewards, but if you could figure out a way to disable the username@insanejournal.com email forwards for paid/permanent accounts, that'd be great. i'm getting real tired of having abusive emails dumped into my inbox because of that "feature".
    • Thanks for your feedback on this. I didn't know this was something people wanted. I'll see what I can do.
      • I personally like the use of an @insanejournal.com email and don't get any spam from it ever and I have a lot of perm accts. I use it when I sign up for an aim name or similar that is related to my journal but I guess for people with spam issues it might be nice if they could turn it off.
  • i would gladly donate $3 a month if you upped the 100 userpics to 150 or 200 for patrons? i don't know if this is something that's feasible for the site so forgive me if it was an over the top suggestion! userpics, for me, would be the best reward for my money!

tbh, this leaves kind of a bad taste in my mouth for a couple reasons. those that haven't supported the site with paid accounts likely never will; this $2K-$5K is going to be on the backs of a handful of people to... what, remove ads for people who wouldn't see them anyway if they bought accounts? give the leeches extra features?

$2K seems like a somewhat reasonable goal, but i'd (and i'm sure others) would like to see the receipts for what this 5K goal is for. i can't imagine the server costs running that much a month, and since this is a donation rather than paying for services rendered, i think it's fair to ask what this money is going toward because the explanations on patreon leave a lot to be desired.
    • Right now the goals we have set are based upon replacing income that would be lost by making those changes. We see this as a way for those who want to support the site in other ways to do so and by doing so are enabling us to shift our income source to make the site better for everybody.

Though it isn't mentioned in the goals there, we will be using this income to replace a couple of servers. Also we need to buy an additional web server to improve availability and scalability of the site.
