Aedan’s back hurt like anything, and the sticky blood welling up inside the cuts they’d made today was making him itch like anything too. The aftermath of 18 with a whip was different to the dozen with the tawse he'd gotten used to, even on his hands, that was for sure. Besides that, too, his side hurt terribly where they’d grabbed him when he’d managed to chew his way out of the heavy jacket they’d used to tie his hands behind his back and made a run, well, a labored walk for it, and he hadn’t been able to stop coughing since another ‘meal’ of disgusting protein shake poured down his throat yesterday morning, even to the point he’d thrown it up today, and been forced to endure another feeding after, to ensure he got some nutrition, and he was freezing as he curled on his side the best he could with his hands restrained behind him by the metal cuffs again, another securing his ankle to the wall with very little space, or give, but in the moment, he couldn’t help but feel a little smug, given the conversation he’d just overheard.
“Me da’s only JUST been killed, and now she’s lost the baby too.,” One of the men in question was explaining, just outside the door, sounding perturbed at best. “Hell of a way to start the year off, isn’t it now?”
“Both my parents went, just two days ago.” Someone else cut in, with a deep sigh betraying his feelings on the matter better than the words. “Freak accident, they’re callin’ it. It may nah be sae bad if Charlie hadnae broken things aff tae. Said he couldnae condone the work we’re doin’ any mair. Condone. ‘S not as if ah’ve doone anythin’ anyone else who loved their country wouldnae dae, right? He didane ken the plan with this.” There was the sound of him tapping the door a little, making Aedan slightly crazy with the sound, but he tried to focus on something else for now.
Given the pain, it wasn’t too hard to try to close his eyes to sleep a little.
“Marian’s nae in taeday, ye ken.” The first guy said again, “Strange enough, she’s just lost her mum tae, an the stepda a few days ago. Ye cannae think…’s not connected is it? Little Prince said somethin’ aboiut the lover. We check him out?”
“What fer? Naebody can make a curse like THAT. It’s bloody bad news, all ‘a us but even a fecking wizard couldnae dae THAT, threats like this one made or nae. ‘S just not DONE an’ lucky fer us all, though the circumstances are nae…” There was a ringing as he paused, answering what had to be a phone.
“Hello? What? His tae? Then that’s jist the few a’ us here t’night? Lucky fer us, e’s all worn out nae. Didnae WANT tae have tae do it, but he got a dozen when he played at runnin’ aff, six mair fer destroyin’ what is nae his. I’d say he’ll be hurtin’ a good bit longer. An’ ye heard the cough and saw him shiver. I don’t think we’ve got a lot tae worry fer, nae. Let’s gae see who else managed at turnin’ up t’night. Ye hear me?” he called through the door. ‘Ye try a thing an it gets worse.”
Despite himself, Aedan let out a hollow laugh, even though it HURT his back, lancing through him in a way no other pains had done before, then found his breath taken away for his trouble. Still, if he could manage, when one got close enough, he’d be able to borrow their phone…
It was a thought at least. For now, Aedan could let himself be content enough in the knowledge thst Damien was on the case and hadn’t let him flounder, like Sebastian and his other friends had done, the way that they’d described it to him so far.
Here, there was a little hope. It wasn’t much of a balm physically, but at least it gave him hope, along with thoughts of his boyfriend, out there trying, punishing, and getting things done. It didn’t make his back or chest or LUNGS hurt less, not to mention his side, but Aedan tried to tell himself it all was temporary, even as he heard their footsteps stride away from his locked and padded room, a little smile on his face for half the moment that he could.
“Told you.” He coughed out, curling back into a ball soon as he could, and wishing for a blanket all the while. Still, it couldn’t be much longer til Damien came for him, especially the way that things were going. If only he could find a way to get to someone’s phone, let them know what was going on. Worth thinking about anyway, if...maybe first another nap. He’d earned that much uncomfortable or no, now hadn’t he then?
