Passing the torch
Who: The Assassins. ALL OF THEM. Feel free, Sherr and Damien. Some of this concerns you two directly.
When: Tuesday Evening
Where: Assassin HQ
What: A meeting and a new direction
Status: Ongoing
Warnings: None so far.
The albatross round Evie's neck was loosening, finally, and she almost felt able to breathe again, and look at those of her Brotherhood, who had not lost their minds and morals during the past month with something other than shame. Relief was a palpable feeling, particularly when it came to things she had been struggling with. Admitting to the fact she had been wrong about some things before the Apocalypse had been impossible, really, even if she'd wished to do it, had felt like failing, and giving up on something difficult, but now that she'd been given proof that her instincts about herself were right, well, it was easier to have admitted what she needed to, to meet the eyes of the others in turn, as they came into the room they'd marked for meetings, lit tonight by candles, for the occasion, even though it wasn't necessary.
Her gaze lingered the longest on their newest brothers, the ones she'd probably hurt most in her attempt to keep things moving here, when it hadn't been right to. Sherr and Damien were good men, in spite of, or maybe BECAUSE of the backgrounds they'd come from, and they deserved better than what she'd been able to give them. It wasn't failure to have taken a while to see what lay before you, and to see it at last, and she'd not be the first assassin to admit to weaknesses, and start again, though it had felt like it at first.
The Creed allowed for many things, but knowledge, of the world, and of yourself, was paramount, and truth born of that knowledge remained the highest ideal that Evie could conceive of, even if it was subject to constant change. All of that made things much easier, particularly as she looked to her senior brothers, who had all been through their share of questions, of things breaking, and being made whole again, with a firmer foundation than they'd started their journeys with. It was only right, for their little brothers to see that example placed before them, and better she admit it straight away. Still, it was a little hard to clear her throat once everyone was in, and then push herself out of her seat, taking a deep breath and meeting her twin's eye, finding some reassurance there.
She'd not told him what it was about, of course, but there were few things Jacob and Evie didn't know about each other by now, and their intuition when something important was going on with the other was usually rock solid. The smile Jacob gave her said as much, along with the small thumbs up he shot her way. All right, then. Time to say it and have done.
"I have been thinking." Evie started, voice clear and strong, and her head held high. "The events of the past few weeks reveal a problem I've been struggling with, for quite some time. One that I was ashamed to tell you of. I've made a mockery of the creed, all that we stand for, and, while it was not my intention, or Jacob's, or the fault of either one of us that caused it, it still shows that I, in particular, have fallen a long way, and have a great deal of climbing still to do. It reveals a problem I've been struggling with for quite some time as well. I took on the position of your mentor, back when there were only three of us, when I was idealistic and stupid enough to think I was able to carry on with it. As it happens, I was wrong. And I've destroyed a good deal many things by trying to prove otherwise. Or near destroyed them, as it were. I was too young.", She was still too young, "I had a lot to learn." And she still did.
"Among all that I've learned, the biggest lesson is how unprepared I am to lead, and how disastrous it will be if I continue. Particularly, when there is one among our number far better suited than I." Evie's gaze swept the gathered group, passing over Jacob's supporting smile, and Arno's nod of what must be commiseration, knowing his story as she did, past Sherr, who had provided them so many resources and ideas, and Damien, whose abilities would take all of them far, and settled on the last face in the room, letting her serious expression become a bit more like a smile.
"You've served us tirelessly, Shaun, through the worst of your own griefs, through many sleepless nights, and passed on over a hundred years of knowledge to those of us who needed the lessons most, and you've worked hard to better yourself in all the skills that don't come naturally. You say that you're a desk assassin, but we all knew what a lie that was, within a month or two of knowing you. A mentor passes on their knowledge and their skills, and links us all to those who served before you. You have and share the knowledge now, you've been my right hand man, already, for nearly a year's time, and you, better than any of us gathered here, can link the past and present, and," She nodded toward Shaun's left arm, where his Blade, composed of lasers and technology, but a Blade, no less, was strapped, "...tie in the future with a good degree of creativity. I think it's time that we acknowledge that, straight off. You'll guard and guide all of us well. But before I finish here, there's something else I'd like to say."
Here, Evie turned the full power of her gaze on Sherr and Damien, the slight smile on her face growing bigger, as she studied only them. "Sherr. Damien. The two of you represent our future most of all, and you have unique gifts and skills and generosity of spirit that's been nothing short of amazing to see unfold. I would like one of you to work with Shaun, advise him, and the rest of us, and be his right hand. Because both of you are so suited, I would advise our Mentor that we put it to a vote." She looked back to Shaun now, the question clearly in her eyes. "What do you say, to both of those?"
Shaun's answering nod, as he stood up, was definitely, DEFINITELY, the biggest relief of all.
