“So,” Thea squinted in the mirror, frowning a little at her eyeliner. “You think I’ve got enough? I don’t want it to go all...Winter Soldier, or like Guy of Gisbourne.” She added, since she and Roy had spent the weeks from Christmas laying low and watching lots of stuff on Netflix and he’d gone ahead and gotten her hooked on Robin Hood, or, as he liked to call it ‘I had a crush on Richard Armitage Before It Was Cool’. “I mean. it works for him, obviously, but…”
“I don’t know, there’s something about excessive eye makeup and leather.” Roy joked, then Thea stuck her tongue out. “Seriously, Amalthea, you look good. Your big brother would have a heart attack so that’s probably a good indication.”
“Aww you say the sweetest things.” Thea leaned over, bending to drop a kiss on Roy’s cheek in favor of blotting her lipstick with a tissue. “You going to be okay? We’ll probably be all night, ‘Zelma mentioned she knew somewhere we could go for drinks.”
“I’ll try to carry on.” Roy promised, nodding at the tv. “Just me, pizza, and Starwars. Not as exciting as your night, but then there’s Ewan Macgregor and then Princess Leia’s objectifying bikini so that I might purge the prequels in the way the gods intended. Really,it should be fine. I’ll only go to the door for the Pizza Hut guy and won’t tell anyone I’m home alone. We talked all about Stranger Danger, remember? Go and have fun.” He added, passing her her jacket and her purse. “You be safe too; I don’t want The German coming over here to yell at me, and God Forbid, your brother.”
“What Ollie doesn’t know won’t hurt him.” Thea grinned, tugging him into a hug. “I’m glad you feel okay with this, being alone. I know it’s been a while since I’ve left you…”
“I’ll be fine.” Roy repeated, and he meant that. While he appreciated everything Thea had done, and did like spending time with her much more than when they were apart, she still needed to have a life. Most girls her age didn’t have to spend their lives babysitting their best friend because the government had discovered he was a clone and wanted him back in one of their labs. The thought usually made him shudder, but for now, he just wanted Thea to have a break and be a normal person for a night. He made that pretty hard, he knew.
“Tomorrow, I’ll make you a breakfast burrito. From the sound of things you’ll need the grease.” he added, passing Thea her jacket. “And if you’re not too awful later, maybe I can get disguised and take you to the range I found. You said you’d shot a little bit before you came here.”
“I got a trophy for shooting at camp.” Thea agreed, then shrugged. “But I was like, eleven. Before Ollie left anyway. I’ll probably suck a lot.”
“You’ll probably be fine. The last replacement my Ollie picked up can’t have been worse than you.” Roy quipped, though okay, Artemis had been...not bad. He didn’t like to think about her that much, though, considering what his having her meant, and he shrugged off the comment easily enough.
“C’mon you’re going to be late. If you’re stopping somewhere it isn’t regulated, pick me up some space-cake will you?”
“Do my best.” Thea agreed, blowing Roy a little kiss and picking up her device, and then dialing in. “I’ll see you later, love you.”
“I...yeah.” Roy managed, not able to say the words just yet, or trust Thea as much as she seemed to trust him, even though part of him wanted to. He smiled anyway, and she seemed to understand, expression softening as she headed off. “Later.” He agreed, not knowing quite how much later that it was going to be.

The concert had been great and getting to know the girls who’d come along even better. Thea liked Azelma, she decided, finding the other girl’s lack of judgement to be pretty awesome, and her sense of humor absolutely wicked. Darcy was amazing too, and there was something about hanging out with THE Darcy that was kind of awesome. Maybe it wouldn’t matter if she was fictional somewhere too, if she could be that cool, she thought, heading inside and going down the hall to unlock her door, managing, mostly, to keep walking upright; after all, she hadn’t had that much.
Roy’d left the door open, she noticed, and she frowned at that, letting herself in and preparing to yell at him if he was still awake. He knew better than that! All jokes about stranger danger aside, they’d talked about that one in depth and made it a rule the day after he’d showed up at her doorstep, shivering in his hospital pj’s and socks from the lab.
“Seriously?” She called, heading into the hall and then toward the kitchen for a glass of water. “I hope you’re not asleep, because that means we’re gonna have an even longer talk about house rules when you wake up, young ma…”
Before she hit the lights, someone was grabbing her around the waist, pinning her arms to her sides and stepping up closer with some kind of a rag. Thea twisted in their grasp the best they could, stomping on the guy’s foot with one of her ‘fuck me’ heels, digging her nails into the underside of his elbow and biting at the hand that came near her mouth.
“FIRE!” she shrieked, knowing damned well that was the thing to yell if you wanted bystanders or neighbors to do much of anything. “FIRE! FI….” The lights flicked on a second later, as that cloth, smelling strangely sweet, got shoved against her nose again.
“Ms. Queen.” A woman dressed in black, hair twisted back in a very professional chignon stood up from a perch at the kitchen table, crossing the room to meet Thea and her attacker, and even as she did, things started to blur and then, to sound as if they came from very far away.
“I’m afraid that you are going to need to come with us.”
And that was when things all went black.
