Who:Aedan Vael, Meghan Vael, Open to all
When: New Years Eve/Hogmannay/"First Day"
Where: Their new future home on the Isle of Skye, on the grounds of Aedan's future teen behavioral/rehab center
What: A party to celebrate the new year and chase away the old. Aedan wants to throw it in everyone's faces that he's okay (he isn't) so everyone is invited, even people he's not speaking to, like Sherr, Jacob and Arno
Rating: Will update if things get tense, for now I'd say around PG-13.
Trigger Warnings: It's the anniversary of Aedan's kidnapping. Discussions of kidnapping, captivity, amputations and force feeding are likely to follow.
The main house, designed to be the center of the program Aedan was starting, was filled with activity as he finished tying a bow around Arwen's neck and let the puppy trail along after him as he walked, his kilt hitting the back of his knees. He'd taken up the task of setting out welcome cards with little notes of a schedule for the party, and, while it wasn't going to be a loud, raucous affair the like of the party Calum was running back in Edinburgh, it was still shaping up to be a good night. Aedan hoped.
It was hard to believe this was the anniversary of everything that had happened to him, in a lot of ways. It felt both like it had happened a very long time ago, and also like it had been yesterday that he'd been kidnapped. In some ways, a part of him had never left the tiny cell they'd shoved him into, and he hadn't been able to eat much in the way of solid food since before Christmas. It was frustrating but he was TRYING to get things back to a semblance of order by making sure his alternate means of nutrition, a new IV to ensure he didn't get dehydrated and was able to take in some calories, was being used adequately. He'd tried to eat every day, but it hadn't worked at all in the last couple days.
Trauma, he'd been assured by everyone, over and over, had a way of cropping up when it was least wanted and you just had to make compromises to keep yourself feeling safe and comfortable. He'd thought about cancelling the party, but he WANTED to have it, wanted to TRY making a new start at last, and not only for himself. Replacing the memories of that night with something lovely would be good for Meghan too.
Currently, Meghan was organising a wide open dancing space in the main house's large multipurpose room. Aedan wouldn't have put one in if the house had been ONLY for him and his cousin when they married, but he intended to use the large room to accommodate future residents of the programme he wanted to create, either as a gym or a comfortable place for the kids he wanted to help to gather for group meetings, or movies or projects. The space seemed comfortable enough for support groups to meet in, maybe for guests to come talk, or for the kids to just have fun.
For now, though, Meghan had set up a wide space and was helping the folk band she'd chosen with setting up. Her hair was arranged in a series of braids and love-knots, and she wore the Starkhaven colors once again with pride, her long "hostess skirt" and sash a perfect match to Aedan's own kilt and sash, and the delicate tiara resting on her head had been a gift from Aedan for the most recent Christmas holiday. Though she didn't understand it, she'd been willing enough to save the trinkets she might have given her family for Satinalia at home, even though leaving it behind had hurt a bit. She'd adjusted, she could tell, but it was nice, for a night, to feel like she was back at home, but as someone who mattered to her family, and had a place in the world again. The red woven circlet linked her to her home, and to her people, making her feel more like she belonged again, and was allowed to be herself. That, she realised, had been a long time coming.
It was amazing to think they would be doing this again this year, when she and Aedan married and they moved here full time, but for now, imagining what that might be like would have to wait as there were guests coming and a lot still to be done. Her skirt twirled around her as she raced around, ensuring that things were ready for the dancing, and for food and...she did hope Aedan would be okay tonight, but he'd wanted to do this, so she was more than happy to handle the role of hostess.
As the set up continued, she glanced at the clock and saw that, soon, the guests would start arriving. Smoothing her skirt, she ran to collect Aedan so that they could check last minute details, but found she'd left that a little late as people were driving in, and heading toward the doorway now. Her grin growing, Meghan practically glowed as she rushed over, grabbing Aedan's hand in the process.
"Happy New Year!" she greeted, trying not to squeal in excitement. "It's so good of you to come."
