Balthier stirs and leans to pick up his phone. It's late, and he definitely can't sleep. Is Basch on the late late night shift or just the night shift? He can text him. "Basch? Are you working super late tonight?"
Basch is night shift, so not super late, and he’s quickly answering. “Just til the normal time tonight. No overtime. Want me to come around?”
"Can't sleep. Have you eaten? I could come to your place or vice versa. Probably will make a mug of something."
“I can come over.” Basch sends back. “Unless it’s easier for you to go. Depends on what you need.”
"How about I grab something from that cafe near the hospital, and I can meet you when you get off? They've got those whipped cream heavy coffees and hot chocolate options." Balthier moves to find some trousers. "I'm leaning toward sleeping at your place, but that's more that I'm on hour two of waking up suddenly or rolling around in my bed grumpily."
“That sounds like a good idea.” Basch types back. “And you’re definitely welcome to. Might be quieter too. I’m not expecting anyone to be down tonight. Vael things are afoot.”
"It's not loud here, just I'm well sick of trying to knit sleeves to to speak. I'll see you there?" Balthier heads to get his vest and to pull on some more sociable shoes. "Anything you want?"
Basch thinks about that for a moment. “Hmm...Decaf mocha and if they have any interesting muffins, I wouldn’t mind one. Preferably berry or carrot. Anything I can bring from the shop here before I leave? Floral’s closed up, but the convenience part is open, still.”
"I'd beg for a novel if I can't sleep, but I bet you have some at home. Postcard?" Balthier snaps a photo of the moonlight on the lake to send Basch. "I can always find someone to send a postcard to."
“I’ll see what I can do.” Basch says, and he’s heading down to grab a couple things, stopping by the break room to see if anything interesting in books are around, since those do tend to be more entertaining when they’re recommended. Also the shop mostly has had the same six crime novels in for about three months now.
Eventually, he’s heading to meet Balthier.
Balthier's got some beading that he's clearly puttering with under a streetlight with two coffee containers. "Hey." He grins. "Sorry for my sleep schedule being a mess."
“I get to see you.” Basch says. “I’m sorry it’s bothering you, but not sorry I get to spend some time with you, if that makes any sense?”
Balthier leans to kiss his cheek. "Exactly. And we're both up. Had weird dreams about being a kid and visiting my mom, which mostly felt - nostalgic."
Basch smiles a little at that. “Did you now? Want to tell me more?”
"From what it sounds like, she didn't like the weather in Archades, and after having the three of us she went home. We were told it was a health thing." Balthier bundles up his things. "Shall we head home? I think it may've been a separation, but I don't know. I think dad missed her, until he got worse."
“Perhaps in a way it was.” Basch muses. “Isn’t that a bit of a thing? Seasonal depression? I do think the leaving you three behind was, well, I suppose it would have been difficult to extract you from your father. “ He makes a little face.
"She was one of the desert tribes, and Archades, at least where we were, was more - jungle like, I guess. So I could see that being a lot." Balthier tucks an arm around Basch. "I remember it being very sunny, and drawing in the sand. We'd sleep during the hottest part of the day and she'd take us around at night. I think I also found a big bug in my shoe and fed it to a chocobo, which she thought was a very practical response."
Basch nods slowly. “That does sound quite different. And…” He laughs a bit. “QUITE practical indeed. I miss them, sometimes. Chocobos.” He tugs Balthier in close against him. “It must’ve been difficult, missing her like that.”
"I was very tiny, so I barely remember her. I think she looked a lot like Issy." Balthier leans a little as they walk. "Light hair, kind of - you've seen Panelo, right? From the game? More her, versus the Dalmascan royal family."
“Oh yes.” Basch nods, smiling. Panelo had seemed sweet and protective and like she’d be easier to deal with than Vaan, or well, less difficult to impress anyway. “Quite different, then.”
"I've got some of her hair? And the longer neck. But it was nice memories." Balthier leans. "But I couldn't get back to sleep.
“I’d imagine that would keep many people awake.” Basch says. Well, at least those in Balthier’s position. He thinks it may be different if people had more normal families in general, but who is he to know that about any family dynamics, hmm?
“Do you feel all right now, or…”
"Kind of agitated and still awake, but - I mean, could've been worse." Balthier tucks an arm around him. "Time to go home, have some coffee and a snack and bed?"
“Sounds good to me.” Basch smiles. “On all counts.” He’s not sure how well the last will work, but he’ll make the attempt. Usually he ends up taking a bit and winding down fairly late. “I did find something interesting from the breakroom. The shop’s had the same few novels for the last few months, but I DID pick up a postcard that’s sort of neat.”
"Hey, I'm up for a postcard and novels at your place. How tired are you? I don't trust myself cooking, but I can try to chat." Balthier thinks about it. "How much of a trainwreck would a date be?"
“Not terribly,” Basch says. “I’ll probably be awake for a bit more. I think it’d be less than a trainwreck. We can find something to do, I’m sure.”
"Maybe tomorrow, if there's nothing major going on with Courfeyrac. There's a place making egg crepes filled with various seafood and other options reviewed in the paper." Balthier digs out his phone. "Teleport back there or do you want to walk?"
“That would be nice.” Basch says. “I don’t have anywhere to be tomorrow morning or afternoon. I’d like that. And hmm how cold are you? There’s a bit of a breeze tonight but it’s nice for ME. How are you?”
"I've got a vest on and layers, so I'm good. We can always jump over if I get too cold. There's a huge bank of jasmine down that way." Blathier points. "Probably outside a cafe."
“Sounds good then,” Basch smiles “And I have a jacket in my bag if you’re chillier.” He’s not planning on using it tonight, so he feels offering would be a good idea. “And that’s pleasant.”
"I spent most of the day doing embroidery. It's a decorated panel for a dress. Mostly beading and jewelry work, but the threadwork is something I can do passably." Balthier leans. "I can show you photos on the phone?"
“I’d like that.” Basch smiles. “Sounds lovely. For the theatre or…”
"Historical recreation, I believe. I think it's samples for a paper, looking for a museum thing." Balthier digs out his phone and offers it to Basch. "We're deliberately doing a modern design to avoid having it be a fake."
“Ah…” Basch says. And leans over to have a look. “Oh that’s lovely. “Is it complicated, though? It looks difficult?”
"It's not so bad. Delicate work, but it's got a lovely sheen." Balthier flips to the next photo.
Basch looks a bit closer. “I like the color choices. Those really stand out with the fabric, too. Good choice.”
"This is the original. Pretty delicate flowers." Balthier shows the original garment.
“Ah very.” Basch nods. “It SEEMS like you might get tired quickly. Mentally so, at least. You’ve said it’s very detailed, but is it at all taxing or more of a calm thing?”
"Calm enough if you make no mistakes? You kind of get lost in patterns and don't see the results until you lean back, but it's enjoyable. I'm doing this as a favor, but I could see - if you wanted, I could do something for us in this." Balthier flipped through some sketches, and some earlier photos of starting the layout. It's a rectangular panel, probably for the bodice of a dress, with bells and coins sewn on the bottom.
Basch considers. “That may be nice, down the line. We’ll have to look at designs, when the time comes closer for making things official. The idea is a good one. I suppose I’ll have to start thinking of something to include as well. It’s difficult though, considering. Noah was far more connected to home than I was. I...don’t suppose I’ve thought of somewhere AS my real home, until here.”
"I wonder if there's traditions here." Balthier shivers and leans to grab the coat. "Right, I'm cooling off a bit. Let's see if the steps help." They've got some steps and a ramp to go down a hill.
“Well, quite a few, depending on where you look.” Basch says. “It’s a matter of choosing ones that seem good, I think. “ He moves over to the steps, ready to tug out his jacket if he needs to offer it.
"I don't want to ask Cal." Balthier laughs. "He'd probably be delighted."
Basch snorts. “THAT would be a long, but perhaps interesting encounter. He may leave us alone with the binders if we ask nicely, though.”
"And not send us curated ideas? What's the term? Pintrest boards?" Balthier thinks about it. "I mean, we'd survive, but -"
Basch snorts, and shrugs. “We can do that part ourselves then, certainly. And they’ve got those too. And magazines. I think his are mostly those. Maybe pages from the internet.” He looks amused. “Nothing we can’t do on our own then.”
"Exactly. And if we want to spend some time with binders, well - it might make him happy." Balthier thinks about it. "Can't hurt, right?"
“Probably not.” Basch nods. “Worth considering. I mean, do YOU have any specific ideas? Because I would be as happy going somewhere quick and getting things taken care of with a few witnesses.”
"I think it'd be nice to have a few things made. Even if we don't stay for the food. I suspect my siblings would want me to dress up a little. A decent suit for the both of us, or something you like?" Balthier smiles back at him. "I'm not particular to a cake, but having some bread and a stew, say, that could be a sentimental meal to make again appeals to me, plus it'd mean we could be sappy fools and not worry too much about cooking intensely later. Probably a cake from your brother to bow to tradition. But some food for us, some witnesses, retire to dutifully eat a little cake and smile awkwardly, and head to bed has an appeal to me."
“That’s easy enough.” Basch says. “Just, you know, something without necessarily all of the fuss wouldn’t be the end of the world. Keeping it simple like that would work.” And he
Laughs. “I can’t imagine Noah’s co-workers hearing of there not being a cake at a wedding he’s a part of. But besides that I think we can manage it all fairly easily.”
"We can look for a vacation place too. Or buy that resort if they're still interested in selling to us. It was lovely visiting it." Baltheir leans as they walk. "Hmm - any cakes you love? I'm not married to having a white one."
“That was very nice.” Basch nods. “And there was quite a lot of room to spread things out. It’d be nice if anyone here finds anyone they’d want to bring along. I sort of doubt that very much for your sister, but Evan seems like he’s at least interested in the possibility. “ And he considers, and snorts at the word choice there.
“When we have a time of year chosen, we might go from there with seasonal. Spring or summer suggests something like lemon or orange but that may be out of place with Fall.”
"I'd say winter, if I was choosing it, but it's up to you. I know Christmas isn't easy for Aedan, but we're keeping this simple."
“Calum mentioned that that was better this year, than they might have hoped, in the lead up. He actually went to the New Years thing. He’d had the breakup but it hadn’t sent him reeling yet. It’s possible it’ll be all right by then, with him and well, it’s not a lot of fuss. That’s more what he has problems with, the chaos and new people that he doesn’t know about being there. He’ll know everyone at this.”
Well, Basch is fairly sure of that.
“I mean, unless Princess Asche shows up on the morning of, or something.”
