A small 'Hmm" escaped him as he settled back. Absently twirling his pen between his fingers as he weighed all the new information, compartmentalizing it section by section for a few, quiet, moments. Before leaning forward once again, half crossing his arms over the arm rests. "Do you know the first thing they teach you, when you go in to learn how to be a doctor? Not to blame yourself for things. Obviously this applies to regular people as well. Blame leads to guilt which leads to regret. Its a vicious cycle and a long one."He stated slowly, giving them to digest this.
"Obviously with kids theres' a little more leeway, but the same concept applies."Pausing,he focused his attention to the older male for a moment. "At the time you felt you were doing the best you could, I imagine? Most parents do usually feel the 'if only's' later but-"Frowning, he set his pen down absently, folding fingers together, thinking a moment. "Lets try it a different way. Would saving him, as you put it, have helped with anything prior to anything leading up to the moment you picture doing just that?"He questioned softly. Giving him something to chew on for a moment as he turned his attention to Em.
"The same idea applies to you and your brother. Being responsible for others actions is a wonderful idea. In theory. But being responsible and heroic never bolds well in practice. People never react the way you assume their going to. Not really. I'm not saying either of your ideas or wants are bad. Or wrong or impossible."He offered the last part hastily. "I'm not saying it wouldn't have worked, either, but dwelling on the what ifs and if onlys, as far as practical, real world, application? Only causes more negative feelings then good."
Shifting his focus, fingers ran through his hair absently at the question. Ruffling it in thought for a brief moment. "That depends, I suppose. Do you feel like it was a bad move?" He questioned in return.
