"Of course he's not..." Meghan finds herself starring at Tony a moment, trying to process what seems like some sort of error in the translation here.
"Ah, you thought when I mentioned the militia I'd meant that was all he's capable of being. No, I'd meant it was what he had open to him at the time, that it was no surprise he'd try for it, since it's common enough for anyone who doesn't know, and wouldn't make a knight in the traditional way to come and fight there instead. And being that he had no idea himself until his sergeant took a notice of his features, it was what there was. If I'd wanted to be doing something like that...I'd not go for the fruit that's lying on the ground already."
Which IS true, that part of things was more being matter of fact than something that she'd meant specifically as an insult to anyone. If you couldn't get acknowledged and you didn't know and had a hint of skill, there was your chance, that's all. And besides that, there's other things that she's guessed at from vague moments and conversation.
"There WAS a lot worse about his mother than anything related to THAT, believe you me. At least if you draw the same conclusions someone used to things where we're from drew them. Those don't matter either, here, or I'm told,at home, since the Inquisition and Divine Victoria opened up the Circles, anyway. But,no, at home, the moment that my uncle would have known and gone through the acknowledgement he'd stopped being anything but heir then too."
It WAS an odd trajectory to take, really.
"Between us, I'm just glad there's not a chance it's going to come to me. Less to worry about all around."
