There’s a while left for last minute preparations, but some things are being picked up and brought in now, and Sebastian’s glad to take care of bringing in the things that ARE ready for the wedding. Right now, he’s carting a bag with their accessories to go with the wedding kilts, and looking at a list to see what they might need now.
Noah texts him from work. "I'm out of here, and I have a sample cake. Are you in town?"
“I’m picking up the accessories at the tartan shop now.” Sebastian texts back. “Just heading out of there. I can certainly meet you anywhere you’d like.” He adds a little winky face, because he can. Aedan makes fun of his using them, but he’s adopted it anyway.
"Anything on the shopping list? The idea of coffee and a wedge of cake sounds - kind of indulgent and lovely."
“Hmm.” Sebastian hasn’t considered much SPECIFIC. “That DOES sound like it’d be nice. I was going to go past the tea shop and see if they had that extra caffeinated English Breakfast that they’ve been drinking at work. I could easily look for something nice to put with cake.”
"I'll meet you there. I just got a message that Balthier wants to drop off something for us." Noah suspects it's some simple signet rings, but - he'll be overwhelmed about it when he's got them. "I think Basch said he liked the orange mix from that store."
“Sounds like a plan.” Sebastian’s on his way then. And he makes a note about the orange mix, for the future. That’ll be helpful to know in case they have anything they want to get Basch later. He’s thinking it might be a nice touch to put in a basket too.
Noah's waiting for him when he gets out, carrying two shopping bags and a box. "Hey." The grin's sheepish, and he's blushing a bit. Might just be the fact that he knows that Sebastian has the accessories. "I'm still amazed, you know?"
“Hey.” Sebastian grins. “Amazed that this is going to be happening? So am I, love. More than. So, I’ve got our ties , and buckles and such like here. And Aedan’s new sgian-dubh.”
"Ties as in - the ribbons?" Noah's not sure on the terms, after all. "And I think Balthier's asked a few of the Wizarding folks he knows if any know a bit about doing hair. For Ellie. If she likes any of them."
“As in the sort that go with our jackets?” Sebastian snorts a little. “And that’s a good thing. She wasn’t certain exactly what she wanted to go with last I’d heard, but was looking online.”
"I think he was thinking it might feel - nicer if he found the right people?" Noah offers his arm. "Shall we head back? And what is the term for the ribbons? For the - being wed."
“Ah, the handfasting cords?” Sebastian smiles. “Those aren’t in yet. Soon, they thought. They had to be ordered from somewhere else and printed.”
Noah suspects the printing will be very touching and he'll cry over them. "I will probably cry when I see them. The good sort of crying. Do you want to see Balthier's gift?"
Well, it’s going to be their tartan, honestly, and Sebastian had gone for the date as well. “I’d love to see.” he says, grinning now. “I admit I am curious.”
"He says he's been commissioned for something, but this was for us." Noah offers the little box. "They're just in a bag. Wax seal rings, or just something to wear for luck and something to fiddle with. It's a good luck thing, in Archades, to give them out."
Sebastian grins at that thought. “That’s sweet of him.”He says. “The luck is appreciated. We’ve got our versions of it, like my heather I’ll be wearing after all.” he grins a bit and goes for the box. “We’re lucky we’ve found such good friends here, for this sort of a thing.”
"We are." Noah looks thoughtful. "I wonder if it'd be bad to ask Arno if there's a good luck thing. for the - uh - knife? For Aedan. In their tradition." He's fishing out the rings. "They're enchanted, a little. I think it's good luck more than actual magic, but - protection."
“The assassins have a thing with their hidden blades but Aedan’s not wearing that yet.” Sebastian says. “I’m sure when they finish his induction, that one will get something, but this is more of a, I can look up what might be common here.”
"I'm just thinking that if there is a tradition for a new knife, in their group, that for a wedding, it can't hurt? For good luck? But there may not be one." Noah shakes his head. "I'm not sure." He tucks the rings back away. "Shall we head back?" His ring has a lion and an "n," which is very traditional. Engraving to add meaning to someone else's icon.
“Ah, not really for weddings that I know of.” Sebastian says. “I can double check, but weddings it’s more of a, well, we do this at times, with weapons. Not quite the way you do it. It’s a sign of allegiance and trust, I’d say. Aedan gave Sherr one their first Yule here, with a bit of the Tartan. It’s a sign someone’s considered family. So, more of our sort of thing. WE could put something on it, though, since it’ll be new.”
"I just . . . realized I never said you were my family." Noah's aiming him toward home. "Is that okay if I do that?"
Sebastian laughs a little at that, rather gleefully. “It IS true enough, and will be truer soon. I’ve no issues with that.”
Noah tucks an arm around him. "Cake and - tea was it that you got?"
“It was.” Sebastian nods. “A variety pack with a few types that everyone likes and the one you said Basch likes. He never really mentions needing things, so it seemed like a good idea, just in case.”
"Want to see if anyone else wants to try the cake too?" Noah's punching in the teleporter code. "Are you cold? Or we could just set up in the kitchen."
“Not too cold.” Sebastian says. “And the house should be warm enough but the kitchen’s a good start. We could move around after. I can let the others know we’ve got food.”
Noah grins. "I think it's not bad luck to try the cake. It's not the final icing, so - we're just testing the flavors?" He's heading to set down the box and put the kettle on.
“Exactly,” Sebastian grins. “This is the fun part. Just think of the combinations we COULD subject them to, if we really wanted.”
Noah laughs. "Just being all earnest and discussing prunes versus apricots?" He's got two mugs now and he's moving to hang up his coat and slide in to sit. "Caraway, by the way, would be very traditional, actually."
“Something like that.” Sebastian laughs. “They’d started going Orlesian fashion the last time I was at a wedding in Starkhaven. Small stacked cakes. Not quite like macarons, but fussy in their own way. I think it’s safe to avoid that sort of a thing.”
"Last I heard, we were going for something simple, single layer. I believe someone was asking if we'd do a removable tartan ribbon topping thing." Noah shrugs. "Something that'd survive getting the table knocked out."
“Getting the table knocked out?” Sebastian raises an eyebrow. “What sort of celebration are people THINKING this is going to be? Cèilidhs are known for going a BIT mad, but…” But even so. He thinks that would be away from most of the food.
Noah laughs. "I think it's more - if anything goes wrong, we'll still have cake and get married no matter what else is going on."
“Well, of course we will.” Sebastian laughs too. “That’s a given. In that case, the sturdy idea’s probably a good one. Just in case, I suppose.” He grins. “So far, I think we haven’t MUCH to worry about.”
"Aye. We know - we've already done the hard part." Noah leans on the counter, smiling at him. "We know what we want, and we can handle the future. The rest is just details."
“Details, exactly.” Sebastian smiles too. “None that are that worrying, to me at least. I think we’ve got this pretty much all right.”
"Work had to tell me that we can't wear green, because it's fairies." Noah frowns. "Which seems - I think that's just for the bride."
“I’m fair sure they won’t go stealing one of us away.” Sebastian nods. “We should be safe here and now. I don’t THINK I’ve caught any of their attentions lately.”
"I'd - think it'd be bad luck as a fairy to mess with a priest. You might get out talked?" Noah's slicing up a bit of cake and pouring tea. "Let's see if we can get people for this?"
“That’s...there’s probably stories SOMEWHERE.” Sebastian fishes out his phone. “I’ll let them know.”
"No wearing green for a bride? Or asking the experts?" Noah's tasting a bite of his cake. "Oh - wait - the cake? And okay, I like this."
“The cake, aye.” Sebastian grins. “Calum probably COULD tell us about wearing green, but…”
“Oh the superstition thing” There’s Calum poking around. “I got your text. I’m told there’s cake?”
Sebastian snorts. “That’s to the point.”
“A man has needs.”
"I was told no black as well, and there was a lot of fussing if I should shorten my hair or let it keep going." It's not that long, but Noah's not kept it as shorn as he did when he wore platemail in a jungle like climate. Noah slides the box toward Calum. "Cake. Wedding cake sample?" It's a light fruitcake, studded with fruit, and some marzipan over it. It's supposedly a traditional Easter cake, but they voted for something not so dark and heavy. It'd look prettier as well, for the photos.
“No black’s an interesting one.” Calum says. “Queen Victoria started the whole getting married in white thing. Evie and Jacob’s queen, when she was young. Well. Emmett’s too, I think. She’d...been around a while. Almost as long as the English Queen now.” He smiles at the sample. “Oh this is lovely.”
“We’re having a state visit in a bit.” Sebastian says. “I’m told as Lord Provost I get to show up and meet some British Royalty. I’m not quite sure WHO ALL is going, but I’m told Prince Phillip is, even though he doesn’t do much in the way of engagements now. Something about it being his city. In name.” he adds, a little posessively and Calum laughs.
"I should probably get some lessons in my p's and q's." Noah shrugs. "I know I'm probably not going to be that - you know - there, but just to be careful. Make sure I don't treat the wrong person the wrong way. Or innocently say something stupid. We might have the cat by then. Might want to make sure we don't get a sudden cat in the wrong spot."
Sebastian smiles. “I probably need to see what’s most relevant here too. I don’t think there’ll be much for us to actually attend but you WILL be the Provost Consort by then.” He grins. “Remind me to show you your badge for events sometime soon. There’re photos online from the one they made when Councillor Hinds was elected and they realized her husband couldn’t wear the Lady’s chain to events. It’s sort of delicate.”
Noah nods. "I'd not mind. You've seen my taste in things. As long as I've got a shirt on, and I'm wearing sensible shoes, I suspect I'd be fine with anything. I will need to learn how to wear it." And his cautious attempts to wear kilts around the house seem to make that rather more charged than it needs to be.
Sebastian just really likes Noah in his colors.
Sebastian does like it. And while it’s not quite a thing they do in most of Edinburgh outside of special occasions, it IS in Starkhaven, so seeing Noah at home like that makes him feel pretty incredible. He loves the idea that he’s got someone in his life willing to be with him, to be HIS. There’s an amazing feeling in that.
And for a visit like that? He’ll probably go kilted himself.
“It was a little bit to get used to with mine.” Sebastian grins. “We don’t have anything quite so heavy in Starkhaven, designwise. Sometimes with armor or for really official things, but...more often other sorts of finery there.”
Today he’s wearing the torc from his grandfather, that came with the letter Calum had saved for him, it’s made of a metal that’s so silver it’s practically white, with carved knotwork along most of the band, ending in two blue stones at either end, which is a little more common for home.
"Would your office explode if you took me down sometime to try it on? Once we're married?" Noah looks thoughtful. "I'd think trying to be quiet about it might be a bit too much for them." Especially if he showed up in full regalia.
“Not at all.” Sebastian grins. “I mean, they’ll want to know we’ve got it right.” Sebastian smiles. “They might get a bit excited, but there are people I can arrange it with who’ll keep things quite. Jane, my secretary’s pretty good at that sort of thing.” She definitely ‘ships it’ but she’s low key at least. Sebastian doesn’t feel weird about it with her.
"Well, maybe we could let her know?" Noah tilts his head. "It'll be soon, after all." He's pretty sure he's not the consort until they're legally consorting, right?
“We should do that.” Sebastian nods. “And it really WILL. It’ll be a good thing, I think, once it’s settled.”
Noah offers him a bite of cake. "I'm going to marry you, and I'm so happy."
“We’re getting married!” Sebastian grins and accepts the bite. “And this is good. I’m excited but I’m more excited for the after.” He smiles. “I’ve got some time off for that week. I think my deputy’s thrilled.”
Noah leans to kiss his cheek. "It'll be nice when all the work is over. I might insist on a leisurely breakfast like a hedonist."
Sebastian laughs a little. “Oh I like the idea. I just want to BE married to you, have it all official.”
