Who: Noah, Evan, Balthier, Ellie
When: Current
Where: Craigcrook Castle, Edinburgh
What: Noah's tired after a wedding, and had a shower and got some tea. Evan's feeling sore, and Balthier actually asked for some help when he woke up in the night, so they're all nested in the library. Ellie ends up joining them and chatting. Like Calum, she wants to get to know Noah better.
Rating/Warnings: Ellie mentions blood magic a little. In this case, it involves some scars from cutting her arms for blood sacrifices.
Status: Complete
Ellie’s around Craigcrook for the weekend, getting a bit of a break from studying with Stephen for the moment, especially since it started getting a little crowded over there. Not that she’d change it now, and it’s great to have people around who GET it, always, but there are times it’s gotten weird lately. Or it’s FELT weird anyway, with the excess of testosterone around there. She keeps hoping that another magician, but this time another GIRL will turn up. It could be a lot less strange in some cases, anyway.
Right now, she’s mostly been laying low. It’s not that she and Aedan don’t have each other’s backs, but...there’s still something awkward there that she doesn’t want to prod at too much, especially considering the magic issue. Still, he’s apparently out attempting to practice dressage, with Hans giving him tips while he rides Citron, so Ellie feels free to wander about a bit. Tugging her sleeves a little lower on her arms, she’s heading around up to the library, glad to have some time to just, well, she doesn’t really KNOW yet. Nova’s trotting alongside her, sniffing things every so often, and looking pretty excited to be here.
There's some cheerful conversation going on in a room off the library. "As soon as Sebastian's back, we can send you off to see if he wants a nap," Balthier's saying. "But for now, tea. And company."
There’s Balthier’s voice, and okay, even though there’s no chance, for a lot of reasons, not the least of which being that anything happening would be kind of creepy in actuality, Ellie’s stopping and smoothing her hair a little. It’s sort of a reflex around the Bunansas, honestly. That’s probably a bad thing.
"And company," Noah agrees, with his deep voice carrying well. "Comfortable, Evan? I can go help Calum for a while, once I have some tea and rest a little."
“I could be worse.” Evan’s saying, even though he’s wincing a LITTLE right now. “Nothing too horrible.” His leg is killing him, sure, but he doesn’t actually want to be dead right now, or even unconscious , so he counts that as a net positive. Yesterday was miserable that way, but today? He’s much better than that.
“You really SHOULD get some rest, yeah. You’ve been on since early, right?”
"Not too bad, but it was one of those weddings where everyone was expecting the worst." Noah sighs and pats the blanket. "Comfortable, Balthier?"
Balthier's curled up on the couch next to Evan. "I'm fine? It was just a bit cold last night, and I'm blaming myself for waking up Evan. Other than that, I'm good."
“It was all right.” Evan smiles. “I was half awake anyway so anyone could have done it. If it hadn’t been you, it’d have been Issy or Courfeyrac on the way to the bathroom. I’m glad YOU seem to be a bit better too. And never blame yourself for waking me up. I’d rather do that, than not.”
Ellie’s not sure if she should continue on or not. Obviously, they’re already involved in something, so she probably should.
"Mistress Ellie?" It's Noah. He must've seen her out of the corner of his eye. "There's cake and tea in here, if you're interested." He looks like he had a shower, and might be cooling down a bit, but he's looking comfortable with a mug of tea.
“Ah, hello.” Ellie steps around to greet them all. “I hardly wanted to interupt. It seems like the lot of you are a bit busy or otherwise occupied, but….it’s good to see everyone again.” It’s weirder with Noah, because she’s been gone a lot, and sees the others a little more often because of Isannah but she IS happy that things have become official and likes him well enough. It’s more a matter of how she tends to avoid Calum than the one where she avoids Aedan at work there.
"Trust me, you're not interrupting anything too critical. Evan's feeling a little sore, Balthier's cat napping, and I'm recovering from a hot wedding party." Noah gestures at his mug of tea. "Thus the tea."
“Makes sense.” Ellie smiles. “I could do with a cuppa, sure. What’ve I missed while I’ve been away?” she wonders, curious as she steps around to pick up a cup and some honey to stir in. “Besides the big developments, that is. That one would be HARD to miss.”
"It's very confusing for me," Noah admits. "I said I'd marry him, and I'd wait a year, and everyone's acting like it's different now. Admittedly, Sebastian does as well, in a good way, but it's - confusing, I guess."
"I think it's that it's formal that you're marrying him now? Dotted the I's?" Balthier sits up a little and preens his hair and fixes his vest. "Miss Ellie. It's nice to see you again."
“Well, aye it IS different.” Ellie says, shrugging a bit. “The year and a day bit comes from, well, some places still have it that you’re trial married for that time. It’s changed at home from THAT, but they keep the timing around to be sure you’re wanting to do it and all, so now you’ve gotten through that.” she grins.
“It means you obviously can stand the being around each other for the long term. I’d say that’s worth celebrating on its own. I can’t think of many people who’d stand each other for that long and if they do manage to get through that long, they might as well be married.”
"It's nice that they're good for each other too. It seems like Sebastian feels less stressed, now that Noah's here." Balthier's patting a seat. "Want to join us? You don't have to."
“If you don’t mind it, truly.” Ellie smiles at Balthier, and tells herself NOT to act like an idiot right now, in front of him. She’s not THAT stupid or anything. Really. Well, okay, she’s not as stupid as she sometimes thinks she is, she’s done THOSE particular affirmations a lot. They’re hard to remember right at the moment, but practice fixes that, right?
Balthier smiles at her. "There's also cake, if you want some."
Noah leans to refill his tea. "I think you said you also wanted to talk to me a bit, Miss Ellie. If there's - I'm not sure what's customary, so I flounder a lot."
“I would like to, aye.” Ellie gives Noah a nod. “It seems only right, since I’ve not been present for a LOT of things. Of course ,as a trade off, I can DO things with fire now.” Not to mention other things she doesn’t want getting to Sebastian as a matter of course, but then, it’s future plans for the most part, and it’s been months since she’s tried blood magic for now, ever since Stephen had said he would support it when she was eighteen and legally able to make that choice herself.
“As for how it’d go though...I’ve not really got any ideas. I haven’t exactly done this sort of a thing before either.”
"Well, then, what would you like?" Noah gestures slightly. He's got a cheerfully colorful bandage on a knuckle like he got a nick at work, which is distracting. "If neither of us know what's the proper thing by custom, we can still fumble our way through things."
“Fumbling seems like our option, doesn’t it?” Ellie laughs a bit. “I’d not mind it too much. I’m certain we can find something to be done and let things move on from there, eh no?” She tries to think about some of the things she enjoys that Noah might as well try out too.
"I'm guessing this isn't purely about the legal concerns about my authority over you, as a minor, which I'm personally leaning that it doesn't exist without your permission. It seems like it's been too short a time to weigh my heart that way, and you've got your own concerns with Strange that are all beyond my comprehension." Noah's looking serious as he thinks. "I will try to make your father happy, and you and your brother safe."
“Aye, it’s not, really.” Ellie says, nodding. “There’s not too much time left for that, besides. This is more about the fact there’s another person about now, who is going to be about in the long term who I’ve managed to be disconnected from, so far. And you have already done most of that, so it’s not as though I don’t trust you, just that I hardly know you.” She hopes that makes sense. “And I’d like to.”
Noah tilts his head. "Isn't it uncomfortable though, sometimes with people? We could do - I don't know - phone calls, or e-mails. Or I could inflict my inability to write a proper letter on you."
“Aye, it can be. Not so much with you, I don’t think. Or well. I don’t suppose it would stay that way, but those ARE options, aye.” Ellie looks serious for a moment. “It’s strangers I’m not fond of, really. It still feels as though I’ve got a secret I’m keeping under wraps even though it doesn’t much MATTER how I’m seen here as is, and most people wouldn’t care about what I can do. There are more like me now, studying with Stephen too. All from different branches of magic and places, but...it does help a lot.”
"And you are more than simply magic, Miss Ellie," Noah sips his tea. "I've got little idea what you'd enjoy, but I will try to think of some options. Would that be nice?"
“So I am.” Ellie agrees. “I have been known to do other things as well.” For one, she’s not bad with a dagger, or with animals, and likes shooting, even though she’s nowhere near anyone else in the family’s level with it. Well, perhaps close to Iomhar’s, though with him it’s a matter of impatience, really. “It’s too bad hawking’s not something done here. I’d have liked to try that along the way. And I don’t suppose anyone’s taught you Wicked Grace, but it’s a game better played in a larger group. More fun that way.”
"I suspect there's people with hawks somewhere. I know they showed some on a nature show." Noah looks thoughtful. "And Wicked Grace, I'm not familiar with at all. Balthier might know it, if we had an equivalent. He and his siblings went to a lot more parties than I did. I suspect you two do not miss it, do you?"
“Hardly.” Evan laughs. “The meetings, yes. I always had a particular joy in dragging meetings out for the people I was annoyed with.” Which was most of them on a fairly regular basis, he’ll e honest with himself. It wasn’t hard to do either.
“Oh likely.” Ellie says, of the hawks. “There would just be more to do if it was more of a thing. And I wouldn’t mind doing something with the wild sort either. It may be worth checking now there’s enough people around the Sanctuary it doesn’t feel a bit odd to just up and leave, sometimes. And Wicked Grace, well, it’s cards. A few more rules than poker has, here, but the same idea.”
"The first thing Issy and I said was that it'd be nice to never have to go to another dance and that we'd have shelves of our own." Balthier smiles. "Cards with more rules? That sounds like something that'd be entertaining. Is it more of a winter game, or just a group one?"
“Group one.” Ellie smiles. “It works at any time of the year, and better if you have people who are quite daring about it. Or very good at bluffing.” She eyedarts at that and Evan laughs.
“I”m told I’m good at that myself.”
"I fear I do not have the blank face you'd probably need, but it could be enjoyable." Noah smiles at her. "What of you? Is your plans just with Stephen, or are you doing schooling as well? Have you read anything good lately?"
“Aye, I’ve been working at things. I should be able to sit the leaving school exam this spring.” Ellie considers the rest of that. “And well, not so much reading just to read, but I’ve started with some Greek, since we DO go off the mountain sometimes and there’s a lot of decent local things around that I wanted to understand. Not that I could follow a conversation just yet, but I’ve leant the animals and such. Have you? Read anything, that is?”
"Some books. I've been reading about art. A sort of light hearted detective series about a female typist working for a district . . . attorney? I think that's what a D.A. is." Noah's definitely looking like he's feeling better for some tea. Balthier's - curling up again to drift back off. He's subtly tucking him in.
“Oh, aye.” Ellie nods. “Aedan had to do some things with one, when we were still in Rhode Island. Well, the office, more like. I don’t know that he ever saw them or just sent in the papers that the probation officer signed saying he’d been to everything and all of the compliance bits.” Balthier’s kind of adorable, really. Especially like that. Poor guy to have been through what he has.
"Aedan seems to be doing well, lately. I'm glad to see that. And you seem happy enough with Strange, which is good." Noah lowers his voice. "He woke up last night, and he's running a little tired. Have you had lunch?"
“I’ve not yet.” Ellie says. “I was checking on where Aedan was, for starters and then watched a bit. It would appear horses can dance. It was a little mesmerizing.” She pauses a moment. “Before it got dull.”
Noah eyes Evan. Well, Evan can't go, with the sore leg, and Balthier's just about asleep. "Let's see what we can do then? Do you want me to bring anything up, Evan?"
“Sounds like that’d work well.” Ellie grins and stands up.
“That might be a good idea.” Evan considers for a second; “I”m not all that picky with whatever you might happen to bring.” he’s studying Balthier for a moment, trying to gauge what might suit him today, but Noah has a fairly good eye for that. “Something that might get his strength back up would probably be good. It was a bit of a rough night for him.”
"I suspect he'd take anything someone made for him. Probably toast and soup, though I should grab some napkins since he'll make crumbs. Maybe a roll instead." Balthier, in Noah's experience, tends to fuss apart bread if he's feeling stressed. "But we'll see what we can do. Have you done much cooking, Miss Ellie? You can supervise, if you'd prefer."
“Not as such. By hand at least.” Ellie eyedarts a little. “I’ve tried it a few other ways, which weren’t bad, but tell me what to do and I’ll get in there. Well, as long as it involves no touching any raw meat unless it’s ABSOLUTELY necessary. I haven’t got any deep seated traumas about it, but it’s gross.”
"I'd make a using my feet joke, but I can't think of a clever one." Noah offers his arm. "If you'll join me, we can see what we can do."
Ellie snickers. “Works enough as a thought.” And she’s heading out with him, taking the offered arm with a sort of grace she’d nearly forgotten. “Thank you.” She adds, giving him a nod as she does that. She’d almost forgotten what that was LIKE.
Noah bows slightly. It's not quite the right motion for Starkhaven, but it seems like something he's done before. "Always a pleasure." Though the following smile isn't that uneasy deference that Noah had when he first got here. "You know, if you like the Bunansas, I'm sure we could see that they visit Greece occasionally. They're taking care of a child, but there's three of them, and only one of Courfeyrac."
