Not Yet...
“My oth… Atem…” Yuugi said softly, bowing his head. “I… I lost…” he whispered. He hid his face, not because he was saddened by losing, but because he was actually smiling ever so softly. Inside, his stomach was in knots. He felt bad on the one hand for having been so selfish as to be happy about being able to keep the spirit with him longer, but on the other hand was relieved he wouldn’t have to say goodbye just yet.
“…Yes… I suppose this just means we weren’t meant to part ways just yet.” The pharaoh was still breathing a little hard from the duel. Everyone was watching in silence, stunned at what they had all just witnessed.
“Moreover, it just proves that I should have been the one to have faced this ‘other’ Yuugi!” Kaiba then voiced, turning on his heel. “C’mon Mokuba. Let’s get out of here. I’m already sick of this dump.”
“Okay, big brother.” the black haired boy replied, dutifully following Kaiba’s fluttering coat tails.
“Hey Kaiba, wait just a minute! Yuugi held his own against the Pharaoh, so don’t just dismiss him like that!” Jounouchi waved his fist at the former champion. Honda shook his head.
“Forget about that guy, Jou.” He said as the Kaiba brothers’ forms retreated up the narrow stairs.
It was then that Anzu rushed towards Yuugi, placing a hand on his small back. “Are you okay? Yuugi?” She asked, concerned. He hadn’t moved from his spot and Atem was still materialized across from him. He also walked towards his host. As the distance lessened, he noticed he was fading, becoming translucent once more.
Can you hear me, partner? he tested their mind link.
My other… I mean, Atem… Yeah. I guess you’re back inside me, huh?
Heh, you don’t have to call me by my name if you’re uncomfortable with it. the Pharaoh said with some laughter in his voice. He didn’t seem sad at all. Yuugi caught onto this and proceeded to question him.
You’re not… sad..?
I suppose I should explain myself. Atem tapped his chin thoughtfully. I was looking at this final duel as a win/win situation for myself. If I lost, I would be free to finally rest with my friends from the ancient past, but… if I won, I’d get to stay with you and my new friends. In a way, I accomplished my main goal- saving the world and learning about who I was.
Oh, I see. Yuugi stood up, and took a few breaths, and decided to address his friends. “Atem’s… back inside the puzzle… still part of me.” He said, although he gathered they’d figured this part out by now considering the door had never opened so where else could the spirit have disappeared to?
“I don’t know whether to be happy or sad.” Anzu said honestly. She kept a neutral expression, but in her eyes, Yuugi could see the relief. She hadn’t wanted the Pharaoh’s spirit to leave. He didn’t blame her. They were just getting to know him, after all.
“I guess it sucks that he’s still trapped in that puzzle.” Jounochi said thoughtfully, “But on the plus side, he gets to hang out with us a little while longer.”
“It’s more like… a long while.” Malik piped up. “From my understanding, there won’t be another window of opportunity for three millennia, at least.”
“I wonder why that is.” Otogi said, stroking his chin.
“Look, I just know what I’ve been taught all my life.” the tomb keeper half-mumbled. “Who knows, though… I’ve been proven wrong before.” He rolled his eyes.
“He just told me that he would have been happy either way.” Yuugi said quietly, smiling, eyes sparkling. Anzu smiled back.
“You didn’t want him to leave either.” She stated, “Ah, I’m glad, here I was feeling like the most selfish person in the world!”
“Well, now that that’s all sorted out, can we get the heck out of this place? It’s starting to gimme the heebie jeebies.” Jou said, frowning. Everyone laughed, and made their way up the steps, the Ishtar siblings trailing them. They reach the top of the stairs.
“I wonder where we go from here…” Yuugi thought aloud. “I mean, we’ve already saved the world…”
“I guess we just get on with our lives.” Anzu answered with a smile. “And we get to know Pharaoh Atem more!” Yuugi smiled back at her and so did Atem, who nodded (though Yuugi’s the only one who could see him).
“I guess this is g’bye again…” he said to Ishizu and Malik. “Maybe you guys can visit us again sometime.”
“I suppose we’ll see.” Malik replied. “If we’re ever in Japan, we’ll make it a point to contact you.”
“Same here, if we decide to come back to Egypt.”
