In the past, Marcus had spent the first day of the new year at the Flint Estate, attending a brunch his mother held each year for her various charity projects. Marcus had never looked forward to the event, his mother had always invited eligible young ladies with one purpose on mind, and he had looked upon it as a chore he couldn't get out of. He tried to tell himself that the disinheritance was a blessing in disguise, as he was no longer required to attend such functions. Instead he could spend the day doing as he pleased, and if that included Apparating to Hogsmeade, where the shops were slightly less expensive than Diagon Alley, and not as pathetic as Knockturn, well that was no one's business but his own. He'd done the food shopping first, and had discovered that the grocer's in Hogsmeade provided pre-packaged meals which only required re-heating. As he'd yet to figure out the stove in his new flat, it was worth the extra sickle or two. At least this way he wouldn't starve. He'd stopped at a few other stores, but it was the pet shop that drew his interest the most. It wouldn't hurt to buy some actual cat food, that way he wouldn't be sharing the tins of tuna with the damned cat. It wasn't that he was accepting responsibility for the stray that kept coming around, far from it. He just didn't want to share his damn food with the blasted animal. He had just enough coins left to keep the thing from starving, or eating Marcus out of house and home. The Village was mostly empty when Marcus pushed open the door, just a family with two children browsing the toads. Marcus ignored them, even when the wife whispered something to her husband and they both stared at him with wide, scandalized eyes. Let them look. Marcus was used to it by now. He took a look around, but didn't see what he needed at first glance. Who knew there were so many different brands of cat food? Hoping he didn't look as lost as he felt, he looked around for a shop clerk. |
