Storm Tossed
The sound of thunder nearly deafened Will as he ventured above decks. The storm had been sighted an hour before it hit, leaving the crew of the Black Pearl time enough to tie everything down and get to safety. It wasn’t a hurricane; still, it was bad enough so that only a madman would be out in it.
Which was why Jack was at the wheel, steering the ship when the rudder could have been tied into place. Snippets of a bawdy song reached Will’s ears, the words being snatched by the wind and he knew if he looked at his lover’s face he’d see a wide grin and a look of overwhelming joy at being at the helm of his beloved ship.
He shook his head and grabbed a coil of rope. It was times like this he questioned his own sanity. Oh, he knew he was setting himself up for trouble. No one could love a person like Captain Jack Sparrow and not be tainted by his insanity. Most of the time he had no regrets. He had Jack and the Pearl. He wouldn’t have it any other way.
Will slipped up behind Jack. “Thought you could use a hand, Captain. What kind of a First Mate would I be to leave you to the winds all alone?”
“William, luv! Knew you wouldn’t stay below like some sorry excuse for pirates I know of. Lovely weather we’re having, isn’t it?”
Will used the rope he brought up to link them together, tying himself and Jack to the wheel of the ship. The winds were getting worse and the bow of the ship crashed into the waves as the rain pelted him. He could feel his clothes become sodden and, as he looked at Jack, he could see the kohl around his eyes had been washed away by the rain, giving him a more innocent look.
Will snorted to himself. Jack? Innocent? Maybe before he was born, but Will was willing to bet that as a babe he’d stolen other children’s candy. He shook his head to clear the image of a four-year-old Jack with sweets falling out of his pockets.
“I’d like to stay below but it seems my Captain has never learned to come in out of the rain.”
“I’ll have you know this is some of the best fun you’ll ever have. Not like the Pearl is going to be hit by lightning or anything; even God respects her! She’s just dancing to Poseidon’s tune, luv. Be a shame to miss it.”
Will rolled his eyes. Only Jack would think a dangerous storm at sea fun! He really was mad.
Then again, Will was there, beside him and behind him, tied to Jack’s fate by his heart more than the coil of hemp that linked them together. Maybe he really was the mad one.
“I hope you realize I’m only out here because I love you.”
Jack grinned. “Course, luv. Wouldn't have it any other way.”
