Who: Betty Ross, Bruce Banner.
What: Meeting in person again after so many years.
Where: Their residential floor.
Simply saying that Betty was shocked was a hilarious understatement. She had managed to sit through the rest of her conversation with Pepper because they did need to catch up and just running off would be rude and Betty considered Pepper one of her best friends. Her mind might have been racing a mile a minute, but she still kept herself politely invested in everything else around her too.
Somehow, learning that Loki was somewhere inside the building paled in comparison to the news that Bruce was there now. Betty tried to remember the last time she saw him, and just the thought of that moment knocked all the air out of her lungs. The last time she had seen him was when he leapt out of the helicopter carrying them to face what her father told her was once Emil Blonsky. For a few seconds, Betty was terrified that Bruce wouldn't survive, but something in her knew he was too resilient, and he would make it, and he did. But after that fight, she never saw him again.
Months later, she received her necklace in the mail, and she knew it was from him, but there was no way for her to find him, and she knew that she she shouldn't try. It was hard trying to re-enter her life after that, but she managed, and years passed before Bruce appeared again in her life, only this time on the news and not in person. The Other Guy was everywhere in the reports of the war in New York City, brought down by Thor's brother Loki, and Betty was both proud of him and terrified. It took her months after everything quieted down for her to talk to Tony Stark, but only a few days to secure employment at Stark Industries. NYU seemed eager to take her too when she inquired. Acquiring her new credentials only sped up the process.
But now Betty was in the elevator, tapping her foot in nervous excitement, as she waited for her floor. It felt like the climb of usually fast elevator was infinitely slower today as it crept slowly towards forty-nine. The closer she got to the floor, the more she realised that she didn't even know what she would say when she got there.
Once the doors opened, however, she switched to auto-pilot mode, moving to the doors that opened into where Bruce was supposed to be and she knocked, staring at the door intently as she waited for an answer.
