First of all, if I didn't make it clear enough in my last post on the subject, you should really really really watch The Quest (it's on Netflix and Hulu Plus!) because it is really really really awesome. Also there is an excellent fan group on Facebook that the Paladins appear to run (I got added by PALADIN BONNIE and I've seen Shondo and Patrick and Lina post and and and), also, Paladins Jim and Jasmine both have tumblrs. Because they're super cool and geeky like that.
I can't take this in order until I TOTALLY FREAK THE FREAK OUT BECAUSE LINA WON LINA WON LINA IS THE ONE TRUE HERO AND IT WAS NOT A DUDE. IT SPECIFICALLY WAS NOT ANDREW. AND SHE WAS EPIC AND AWESOME AND ugh I'm just so proud of her, because seeing the way she bounced back and really showed them that she deserved and could do it after nearly getting banished like, two times in a row? Or was it just the one? Either way she won like two marks in a row right after that and you could just see her confidence start to grow when she hadn't done a lot to make herself stand out before that. I was really just kind of meh about her until that.
And after Shondo didn't vote for her, and Andrew did, and you could see that he did it just because he didn't want to go up against Patrick and he figured he could beat her, and you could see her realizing that was why he did it. And Andrew and Shondo going in that final task like they were just competing against each other and there wasn't a third person, and then that third person, whom they'd discounted, totally whooped their butts. That was BEYOND satisfying. SO PROUD OF HER.
Andrew had really been starting to annoy me the last few rounds because... and you know, maybe it's just that the directors had to make someone else at least slightly the bad guy (of the paladins) after Christian left, but it seemed like Andrew started to show he had the wrong motivations. And attitude. There was this annoying subtle/unsubtle misogyny going on that wasn't really like Shondo's straightforward approach, but sort of... backhanded compliments and that sort of thing. But I guess he did that before in the battle dome, didn't he say something about one of the women (Leticia) absorbing the blow really well when he bounced off Shondo and ran into her? It just seemed nearer the end that he was not only way too impetuous, but that he didn't really value any qualities besides the ones that he himself had. And he did have good qualities! But other people had them too, and he just didn't see much further than strength and speed.
And you know, he said he valued other things, or he talked about it like he did, but you couldn't see it in his actions. So even when he talked about how great Bonnie was (after voting against her) I did not buy it, not like I believed the others meant it (more on my Bonnie feels later), and when he talked at the end about how he realized he should have been more like all the people who had been banished before him, it just felt... not real, not genuine. My roommate said it didn't feel like he actually understood what he was saying. Very lip service. "The person who won is the one who was always nice and helping people" um what because Jasmine, Adria and BONNIE were totally not helping anyone????? What is wrong with your stupid head????
Also that stupid howl thing he started doing was pissing me off.
Anyway. By the end I was like, ugh dude shut your fratboy face, I can see why you and Christian were so tight now.
And the fact that he got to the last stage in time to see Lina hit the bullseye was SWEET. He didn't even have a chance to shoot an arrow himself. FAVORITE.
I was really surprised and proud of him for winning the challenge with the swords, but later on he was really getting on my nerves.
So after Leticia was banished in the seventh episode, Bonnie was in the eighth and the way they treated her just made me so happy. They showed her so much respect. She was the first to get her own montage! And she handled it with grace again -- I should have been really upset, and I do think it was crap that at that point she was obviously out just because she wasn't as physical as the others because dude, what do you think you're gonna have to do with that spear? Do you think you'll have to seriously duel Verlox? The fight is rigged and you know it, y'all. Get over your athletic selves.
But the way they kept acknowledging how awesome Bonnie was and that she deserved to be in Everrealm, that they talked about how much she'd grown and what a big part of the show and the experience she'd been. I LOVED that. I really really really loved that. I didn't want her or Lina to go, but I understood them voting for Lina at that point. My roommate was annoyed at Patrick for lying about how well she'd done in the dragon egg challenge, but I don't think he was really lying? I think he really thought she'd done better than she had. And that's because she misrepresented how well she'd done, which I think was mainly because she was embarrassed. I've done that sort of thing, out of frustration that something wasn't working. "Ugh I was doing well and now I screwed it up." So I don't blame either of them for that, though I kind of side-eyed Patrick for helping Bonnie before Lina was even done. Um, dude? I get that she's like your little sister, but she's supposed to do it at least a little on her own?
I loved their relationship though, and I loved how she hugged him and asked him to win it for her.
And then of course, he was out the next round. Totally just because Andrew was afraid of the competition -- dude, look, I get it that you want to move forward, but there's really no reason to be unnecessarily insulting to Lina, who busted her butt to get that far. Love you Patrick, and I'm sorry you had to end on that note, but seeing Lina continue was a big relief.
THE FINAL BATTLE WAS THE BEST THING, LIKE. I THOUGHT ANSGAR WAS DEAD AND HE CAME BACK TO LEAD THEM. ALL THE PALADINS CAME BACK TO FIGHT. I THOUGHT WE'D NEVER SEE THEM AGAIN. EVEN KATIE WAS THERE. KATIE. I had been heartbroken over/for Katie since she got banished first episode, it just seemed SO UNFAIR. She wanted it just as much as anyone but she was out because she tried to do the thing that made the most sense for her to do (all the teams had women up top guiding the scorpions) and then when they failed, the dudes ganged up on her in the Fates' challenge. And then that's it. She was done, she wasn't worthy, and I could only imagine her leaving and crying and crying and crying. It wasn't fair.
So when the Fates made all the paladins appear for the battle AND KATIE WAS THERE I think I was even more excited to see her than I was to see Bonnie. KATIE GOT TO DO SOMETHING AFTER ALL. And it looked like she was taking out a lot of her frustration at being banished first. Good for you, Katie. You take out that frustration.
I wasn't even annoyed to see Christian again. It was just a really beautiful and awesome and moving moment, seeing them all appear. Also a REALLY cool effect, like wow.
SO that's the show and those are my many feelings, I loved it, I need a second season, I need to know who the Vizier was talking to in the bit at the end, who was freeing him??? ANSGAR ISN'T DEAD and neither is the Queen or Crio and it's such a relief and ahhh. I loved this show.
Someone made a quiz to say what kingdom mark you deserve! The fans are lovely. Everything is lovely.
ETA: I forgot to say stuff. SHONDO. Oh my WORD he is funny and has the best soundbites. (The way he kept talking about how ugly the hag/banshee/Rana were!) But one of my favorite Shondo moments was actually when they were giving their inspirational speeches to the chief of the Rana and he JUST FLAT OUT SAID HE WAS THE ONE TRUE HERO AND THIS IS WHY. You could see Crio behind him going WTF MATE you're NOT PROVEN to be and you're totally not supposed to be saying that. It was freaking hilarious.
On the subject of the Hero Speeches, holy COW did Lina rock the heck out of it. I can't remember the specifics of what she said but the fact that she just took the lead, just jumped right up there without the time to prepare something, I was SO proud of her. And Patrick! Patrick's was probably the most inspiring, talking about how he'd left his wife and child to fight for a kingdom that was not his own. Andrew's was a mess and he went last. Off the cuff speeches, not his forte. Not that it would be mine, either.
The later tasks were SERIOUSLY COOL. Cutting themselves out of the Rana cages? AWESOME. The banshee challenge? SUPER COOL. (I really thought Lina would win that one, but seeing Shondo's face get pawed by the banshee was worth it.)
