Alice nodded at his words, and she leaned against the counter hesitantly, peeking down to see everything he was pointing to. She wanted to mention that it seemed like he really needed some help. And that she was willing to help, but now didn't seem the time. After all, she couldn't swallow the lump in her throat, let alone put another sentence together.
Without thinking, Alice responded a little more loudly than she intended. "What?" Realizing herself, she brought her voice back down, similar to the level of his. "Laurent?"
