“It sounds like it,” Caroline said gently, trying to express sympathy not compare hardships. Her parents were at least talking to her. That meant she was having an easier time of it than Isabella; in her mind, anyways.
“Well, hopefully she can talk some sense into him.” It wasn’t too likely though. With Isabella’s mom being a Muggle, it would likely be pretty easy for her father just to tell her she didn’t understand. She didn’t envy Isabella’s position in that regard.
Seeing her horrified expression, Caroline chuckled. “Slacks aren’t all bad,” she assured her. “Maybe you can try on a few pairs?”
“All right.” Caroline was really nervous and excited about going into Muggle London. “It’ll be our little secret, okay? My mum and dad are mad enough at me as it is. I don’t want to be grounded all summer.”
Caroline listened to Isabella’s story. “Why did you mom have a preference? Just because it was closer or something? Or because you would rather go to Hogwarts?” She didn’t want to be rude, but with her mom being a Muggle, how could she have a preference?
“What a total prat!” Caroline exclaimed, appalled by his behavior. “I’m glad I didn’t know that before, I would have thrown something at him in the café.” She shook her head in disgust. “How could he say that? You are beautiful!”
Caroline suddenly felt really embarrassed. Now that Isabella knew, would she feel weird about the compliment?
