what is allrecipes.com?
AllRecipes.com is a website that allows people to submit their favorite recipes and share them with the public. AllRecipes users can 'rate' recipes using a five-star scale system and leave reviews. Other features of the All Recipes site include free membership, a personalized 'recipe box,' how-to videos and over 40,000 recipes. Some of the tools on All Recipes includes nutritional analysis of recipes, automated shopping lists and a 'search by ingredients' search engine.
background & history
All Recipes was founded in 1997 but was originally called CookieRecipes.com. The founders consisted of "a group of web developers and anthropology grad students at the University of Washington, who also happened to be frustrated foodies. When the founders realized that there was great interest in recipe-sharing online, they expanded the site to include all kinds of recipes. AllRecipes.com was acquired by Reader's Digest Association in March of 2006. Today the site has a database of more than 40,000 recipes, is the largest online community of home cooks in the world and is also one of the busiest websites in terms of site traffic in the world, with an average 8 to 12 million unique visitors each month.
In 2008, they introduced localized versions of the website for different countries and world regions, including Germany, China, Australia / New Zealand, United Kingdom / Ireland and France. They state that more localized site versions are planned for 2009 and beyond.
