Everything looked good for flying his kite for the first time. Now Lorcan was just fiddling, putting off the moment of truth. It was ridiculous to be nervous about flying a kite -- Lorcan had any of number of projects at work that were far more important, and much more likely to fail for that matter -- but he liked this kite, and more importantly he liked the kite club, and didn't want his first effort to be a dramatic failure. He should have thought of that before putting together this kite.
"You want me to hold it up for you while you run?" One of the other members who didn't have a kite today made the offer.
Lorcan waved back and shook his head to acknowledge and decline the offer. "This one doesn't need that," he called back.
"Oh yeah?" the other kite club member called, sounding interested and a little skeptical, probably because this was Lorcan's first kite. Thus challenged, Lorcan glanced around to make sure he still had room -- one of the mascots (the lion) was nearby, but not in the way -- and then tossed his kite into the air.
Once airborne, the eagle kite's wings unfolded, beating just enough to keep the eagle in the air but not enough to pull it higher. Not an immediate failure at least; Lorcan smiled and started running to give the eagle a bit more lift -- with a little bit of height it might catch one of the fitful breezes on the pitch.
