Lorcan nodded and ate another chip because it was there, and then put the rest back in the bag. "This is rubbish," he told Min, setting it aside -- it wouldn't save well -- then glanced at Corrie. "Unless you want more?"
He glanced around, trying to figure out the best place for him to settle down for the night. The food had helped, but not enough to make him want to stay up too long. And Corrie would probably be uncomfortable--
Just Corrie? he asked himself, and maybe it was one of the fixations of exhaustion, but the answer suddenly seemed extremely important. Mostly because it showed in clear relief the high wall of impossible that he'd set up between him and her -- the wall that let him take off his shirt to make a bandage without blushing until later, the one that let him hold her and help her and even worry about her being uncomfortable without it really touching him.
But she was impossible, and not just because they'd broken up years ago and that, clearly, was always going to be awkward. Corrie was like Lucia -- bright, bubbling Lucia, who he was also attracted to, but who he hadn't wanted to pursue (except occasionally when he was feeling especially lonely), because she was young and innocent and he'd worked out that if she wanted anything, what she wanted was going to be what Corrie had wanted, which was what a lot of people wanted, which was--
His thoughts skipped sideways to Pema, and then away. Why was he even thinking about this?
Oh. Corrie. He realized that he was staring at her, and he looked away, feeling like she'd just pointed out he wasn't wearing a shirt again even though now he was and she hadn't said anything. Where was that wall of impossible when you needed it?
He waited, very still, until he'd regained his composure -- maybe Corrie was too busy eating to notice -- and then asked, "Where do you want me to sleep? Min can divide the room into two if you want." He looked around a little ostentatiously, measuring and also making a show of measuring the distances with his gaze. Neither of the halves would be exactly room sized, but it would work.
