Ally hesitated for a minute before she did as she was told, heading into the garage just as she heard the footfall coming towards the kitchen and it was just as she disappeared their mother entered the kitchen and she was busy squeezing her way into the back of her brother's car and hiding in the back as she'd been told to. Getting into the back had been hard by Ally was small and slight and flexible and had squeezed into smaller spaces in her life.
Her heart was hammering in her chest as she waited, half expecting her mother to turn up and lean through the door and talk to her to draw her out for the arse kicking she knew she was going to get at some point. But not right now, because the face that appeared in the window didn't belong to their mother, thankfully, it belonged to her brother and she felt a surge of relief that pushed through her so powerfully that she actually felt a little sick with it.
Fuck, she thought she was totally screwed for a few minutes then. She wondered what she'd owe him for this life-saving move in the future. He'd probably bring it up in ten years time when he wanted her to do something she really didn't want to and she'd owe him forever for saving her from this.
"Are we free?" she asked, shifting until she could curl her hands over the back of the passenger side seat. "Can I get in the front yet?"
