In the North, it was generally preferred that men left the rearing of children to Maesters and lady wives, septons if it was a house with Southron blood. As a King, William was hardly expected to sit at the bedside of an ill child, but he felt compelled to sit with Gwyn for at least a few moments each day, hoping that his presence helped to ease her illness. The plague was abating, for the time being, but William was hard-pressed to trust in word of mouth when it came to the safety of his wife and children.
While the smallfolk surrounding King's Landing railed at the ill luck that the Wolf King had brought to their city, William grew wearier and wearier of the throne. It was of no fault of his own that he'd been placed there and if a Targaryen showed up to stake their claim he would pass his own claim off with both hands. He'd been happy at Winterfell, as happy as he had ever been, and the surroundings in the South were alien and unforgiving. At least he knew what he was dealing with in the North, with the ice and elements. He was not nearly savvy enough for the South's games of politics.
He smoothed the curls back from Gwyn's face, unsure of what to do to comfort her. She still did not rise, nor speak, but she seemed to be a little more restful than she'd been in the earlier days of the plague. Still, it wasn't his place to sit at a child's bedside and he leaned back, occupying himself with the budgets for the month. The Master of Coin would be ill at having his job taken away, but William needed something to occupy his time.
