When Tristran couldn’t sleep as a child, he would climb to the top of Seagard’s walls and kick his heels over the open air as he watched the distant, tiny ships move across the bay. Even he realized that would be a little too undignified to try at court, so he settled for leaning out over an archer’s nest, and listening to the waves against the cliffs below. Gods, but he was growing tired of this place. He’d never imagined he would end up pining for the Riverlands, but more and more lately, he found himself thinking of home.
He was a little surprised that the guards had let him wander out here, so late at night. It was obvious from the way they had glared that they hadn’t been happy to see him, but they’d let him pass without objection. Paying more attention to the people entering the keep than to those leaving, perhaps. It would be a good idea, in that case, to make his way back to his rooms before the sentries were changed. It would probably be a good idea even if the guards hadn’t been more alert than usual, this past month. It was late, and he hadn’t brought a cloak with him. That was the last thing he needed, to catch a chill after wandering around the Red Keep in the dead of night. He tried, and failed, to stifle a yawn, and told himself he would stay just a few more minutes.
