Carol wasn't born with abilities. It was something that happened to her, but once she got them under her control, she was into it. She joined the Air Force to make a difference, and the level she could do it on now was so much bigger than that. It was a lot of pressure, but she was built for it. Her powers just seemed to spring naturally in a way that suited her. Her flight didn't stop her from missing planes, she still jumped in them sometimes for a leisurely ride. She was envious of people who had a better handle over what they were. For a younger woman, America had the aura of someone who knew herself and what she could do.
Carol preferred directness. She was terrible at small talk, outside of the people she knew and saw on a regular basis. She picked up on hints now only because she was forced to learn from interaction. "It does. It feels like it was avoidable too. I don't know why there wasn't better protection." It wasn't like threats against his life were new, he probably had thousands, and usually he had the X-Men backing him up. Between Xavier and Jean, they should have been scanning. Carol knew blaming people wasn't the right way to go, but it seethed in her anyway. And the undercurrent was the same. Maybe it would've been different if it was her.
"He hated fighting. It was always a last resort. But I know what you mean." Xavier was an active pacifist, so that was hardly a secret. But he believed too in the strength of the human spirit. He was that damn optimist, always supporting the best in people. It was what made him do the thing that broke their connection, she knew that. She was angry even if she got it. He was him. Redemption was offered, especially to people who didn't deserve it. Magneto could've been stopped so long ago if the telepath wanted.
"He wouldn't want us to get revenge." Justice, though? Definitely that. It was going to be difficult for any of them, the people who knew him, to be so clear headed about it. She couldn't hit the person who deserved it, so she was going to have to hit something else. America offered the chance, and Carol wasn't going to argue with her. They were a good match, that much she knew, and she nodded firmly at the offer.
She started out simple. A double tap punch, one jabbing at America while the next happened quickly afterward in case of a block. And she was able to use a good portion of her strength behind it.
