Jean turned the page of her book. Reading nowadays, especially reading for pleasure, was slow going. She couldn't seem to lose herself in a narrative. She'd be reading, and then something would trigger a thought about Charles or the school or any of the million and one worries in her head. She'd find herself two pages later without the faintest understanding of what she had been reading, and she'd be forced to stop and start again.
Still, she kept trying, if only because it was a distraction. She hit another block and closed her book with a sigh, tipping her head back where it rested against Scott's shoulder. It was nice to be able to just sit with him. In all her darkest moments, she craved physical contact because it kept her grounded. He was steadier than almost anyone she'd ever met. He and Storm were the two people in her life that she knew understood, in the same way she did, the responsibility of powerful and unpredictable gifts. The measure of control they lived with made pressing onward through their grief easier, but it made processing that grief so much more difficult. She was relieved, in a way, that tomorrow would be the last of the official mourning. Every time one of these ceremonies came up, she felt flung back onto that stage again. She wanted to put some distance between herself and his death. They all needed to start doing that.
She watched his face for a moment before pressing a quick kiss to his jaw. She turned on the little loveseat they were sharing and wrapped her arms around his shoulders. "Do you want to go take a walk or something? I think I could use the fresh air."
