It was a gray day. For the rest of the region, an oppressive rain hung over the afternoon, but Storm had offered to work around this so that they could gather near the burial site. It was an old cemetery on the very outskirts of the campus, part of the historical home of Charles Xavier. He had opened his home to all who gathered that day to mourn his passing. Now that he was gone, his home was theirs alone, but it was nice to know that he could be laid to rest in the little spot of peace they had all shared together in such a turbulent world.
They had done a viewing privately earlier in his office, for the adults who had known him the longest, so that they could say their goodbyes face to face. He hadn't had any close family to invite, though Jean had made attempts using Cerebro to contact David Haller that had gone ignored. The people who really mattered in his life were mostly still at the school, either as X-Men or working with the students or students themselves. That was Charles's family, and on this day day everyone wanted to do right by him.
The coffin was closed and carried to the cemetery where chairs had been set up for the funeral itself. There would be prayers and remembrances, and then, at last, Charles would be laid to rest.
