Lily sat back in her seat and tried to take in all that had been said. Her eyes flicked periodically to Aberforth Dumbledore, who was talking in low voices with Moody on the other side of the room. Harry was standing near them, apparently examining a painting, but Lily had a feeling he was eavesdropping. She didn't blame him, but she thought any more talk would drive her mad. A plan of sorts had at last been hammered out, and after twenty years of struggling to survive, the start of a new beginning was near. Lily was no coward, but she couldn't remember ever being this anxious.

Lily had not slept much the previous night. She had nightmares of a time long ago, a night that despite its distance was imprinted on her memory like acid in stone. She rose early, and took a long bath, having a little weep to herself.

When she was dressed, she went to the wardrobe and pulled out the little box she had kept for eighteen years, even when they were living in hovels or tents. She opened it and took out each object, one by one, and held it for a time. A scrap of blanket. A rubber snitch. A tiny sock. A lucky charm on a short chain just long enough to go securely around a baby's wrist, for special occasions. And a small pile of photographs. These she lingered over the longest, and for once, she did not cry. She took the last one, a close up, taken on his first birthday. He was laughing and flailing his hands about, not quite coordinated enough to wave at her. She could just see her own fingers entering the frame near the bottom to tickle the little tummy.

She went downstairs and took out a candle from a drawer, setting it on the table. She leaned the photo up against it and busily set about pulling ingredients out of cupboards. She whisked together a simple chocolate cake, and made some icing while she waited for it to bake. She hummed an old tune as she worked, and when it was done, she set it on the table, dimmed the lights and lit the candle with her wand, watching the little boy laugh in the flickering light.

July was a difficult month for Lily. She was holding off on the pain and sadness that she knew would eventually cast her into a black mood in a few weeks. Thankfully this was not too difficult, with three big missions over the last two weeks, she had plenty to occupy her time. Unfortunately, so did James, which meant that they saw each other just as little as usual, except during dangerous, death-defying activities.

When he sent her a note in her journal to say he was coming to look for her, she smiled and put it aside, getting up momentarily to check her hair in the mirror. She was perhaps not quite as much dynamite as she had been twenty years ago on their wedding day, but she had at least washed and changed out of her postal worker's uniform. True, she was wearing comfortable pajamas, but she refused to get dressed up like a stripper for her own husband. Well. Unless it was a special occasion.
