Who: Theodore and Luna (and Goyle, NPC); other students in Theo's year can have been present too, probably.
What: A lesson in killing people. How lovely.
When: Monday during class [forward-dated]
Where: Dark Arts class.
Warnings: Violence, character death, angst.
Status: Complete.
Theodore always hated watching this. He had a strong stomach, thankfully; he wouldn't last long as a Healer if he hadn't, but it made him sick in a way that had nothing to do with being physically ill. Cool, rational logic made him fairly decent with the Dark Arts, but it was different when he wasn't the one in control.
Different, especially, when one of the more sadistic students was the one in control. The servant Goyle was using to demonstrate was a stark contrast to him; there was only ugliness and cruelty in his expression that Theodore could see, but the little blonde girl looked dreamy, her eyes unfocused and gazing absently at a spot somewhere above their heads. She had to be in pain, and her body twitched and jerked unpleasantly with it, but her expression never faltered.
It was the look on her face that made it impossible for Theodore to look away. He couldn't quite believe that someone could look so innocent in a place like this, where all of them had bloodied their hands at one time or another. He tried not to pay attention to the curses being used, knowing that his active imagination would conjure images of exactly what was happening to the unfortunate servant's body, but it happened anyway. After a little while he wasn't sure which was worse, the images in his head or the sight in front of him.
And then, suddenly, she fell. There was a brief look of surprise on her face as she started to fall backwards, but it was replaced by an odd, small smile.
Theodore barely even realized that he'd gotten to his feet. He registered vaguely that Goyle had lowered his wand, and people had begun to talk, but he moved forward, kneeling at the servants' side. He hadn't even known her name until she had been brought into the classroom an hour ago, and he knew just by looking at her that she was gone.
Dead and still, no signs of life at all, when he tried to detect them with his wand. It would have been stupid to try healing her here, in front of everyone, when the point of this class was to hurt her, but he knew that he would have tried, if there had been even the tiniest spark of life left.
"She's gone," he heard himself saying, as if from a distance.
"Well, it seems Mr. Nott has volunteered to inform Lovegood's student that she won't have the use of her servant anymore."
Theodore glanced up, a bit horrorstruck by the idea at first. If the student cared as much for their servant as Goyle did, he absolutely did not want to be the one to tell them. But when he heard who it was, he nodded. Although it may have been intended as punishment for showing any compassion for the servant, he didn't think it would be good for Vera to hear it from anyone else. Certainly not from Goyle, or any of the people who were congratulating him on his kill.
Numbly, Theodore found his way back to his desk, wishing that he had the ability to smile when he was surrounded by horror. Luna Lovegood had been so much stronger than him, stronger than any of them. Now she was gone.
