Remus was writing letters. He had correspondences with quite a few people outside of England from his days overseas, and though owl post was not easy to get out of England undetected, neither was it impossible. Several of Remus's contacts were still procuring wands, and others were gathering whatever rumours they could. It was, by and large, fairly fruitless, but worth the risk even if just for the small advance knowledge about things like British Ministry Officials seen conversing with Italian Ministry Officials. That could not be a good sign. Surely Voldemort wasn't insane enough to try and take all of Europe when he could barely hold his own country?
Remus was so engrossed in his response that he started physically at the sound of knocking on the front door. He popped his head out of the office and walked, wand drawn, directly to the door. He peered through the peep hole and saw a stranger-- neither a good sign nor a bad. He did not remove the chain (though it was a pitiful barrier against any wizard) as he opened the door a crack and said, "Yes?"
